Show me your: Vertical drilling jigs - bennybmn - 12-22-2015
I need to install hanger bolts in the ends of some stool legs. I'd like to get them nice and straight! I've seen a few shop mad jig plans online, but I thought I'd see what the brain-trust has here. The legs are only 7+" long, so a pen thing would almost work, but I'd like flexibility to do different shapes and sizes.

Sorry I have no suggestions for vertical drilling, because I always use my Shopsmith, with its horizontal boring capability and length of piece is not an issue.

I use my lathe whenever I can.
Is there anyway you can clamp the leg to a table? Then you can put a drill on a shopmate and get it level with the center of the hole and drill the hole.

Drill a hole into the end of a square piece of stock ( say 2x2 ) as deep as you can the same diameter as the leg ,(slightly smaller if the leg is tapered) lower the DP table insert the leg in the hole align it with cross lines clamp it to the table and drill the hole(s)
KIS , IMO everything else would take way more time than it is worth for 4 ( or however many you need ) holes

This made a little taller should work for 7" pieces.

I have a drill chuck on my RAS. Comes in handy for horizontal boring.

Great ideas, Bill. I have a DP fence I can clamp to also. I don't have a lathe, or I'd probably go that route...
Also, I plan on making more of these stools, so I don't mind investing a little time into a decent jig.

I saw those as I was poking around the interwebs yesterday. Interesting ideas. I'm definitely leaning towards something similar to the family handyman one for my purposes. I thing what I really need to do is make sure my DP table is square to the bit

Have long-10" to 12" bits? If not, some drill rod? Welding rods? Any nice straight piece of rod will do really, and a 1/4"dowel center is handy here also, but a finish nail works too...
lower your DP table and put the bit, rod, whatever into the drill press. Fasten a piece of 3/4" ply to the table and raise it up to where the rod can be brought down to it and lock it in place. Turning the chuck by hand, mark where the rod hits or in other words where the center of the chuck is Put the dowel center or nail in at the mark Cut the nail off 3/8" or so above the ply if that's what you used.
Take the rod out of the chuck and put in the drill bit that you're using. Center mark both ends your legs as you would for a lathe, put the bottom center on the nail and drill the top.
I often will use a plumb bob to do this for 16-30+"
Next I have to swear you to secrecy 'cause the experts don't want this getting out......
