I have a Ward Powr-Kraft 26" cast-iron arm scroll saw (labelled as jigsaw).

The arm does not move; only the bottom end moves.

The bottom uses an oil-fill box. It is low now I think.

Should I use the thicker gear oil (as for manual transmission for cars) or the thinner motor oil?

Is there a general rule for this to whether use gear oil (thicker) or motor oil if you don't known specifically?

Thanks

The manual for a vintage Powr-Kraft 12" scroll saw recommends SAE 30 or 40 oil.

My newer 12" Powr-Kraft saw looks like this one. I use SAE 30 oil (non-detergent).

What Lynden said. Non detergent oil is best in this application. Course back in the day they probably used whale oil....
