Wax Strippers

Is there such a thing as a wax (only) stripper?
Does it / do they damage the underlying finish - whatever that may be?

Mineral spirits will remove wax and usually not harm a finish. As always, test first.

Mineral spirits, naphtha or turpentine will remove wax from any imperious surface. You need to wipe on the thinner, and then wipe with a clean paper towel changing to a clean face with each wipe. Just wiping on the thinner will only smear the wax around leaving it on the surface when the thinner evaporates.
In general, none of the above will damage a fully cured surface. However, you may end up leaving and sort of hazy film on top of a gloss substrate.

The above is correct. But TEST! MS and Naptha can soften some oil/varnish mixes even when they are fully cured. Hopefully its not a silicone wax.
BTW These speed things up.

I am writing instructions for my grandkids about the care and feeding of their blanket chests. I've scared everybody off of using wax but the scare will wane. No point in having a repairable finish like shellac if they don't know how to do the repair.
