Tips for Searching the Forums

This forum's search feature may return confusing results for you if you use more than one word. This is because by default, searching for several words will return results with any of those words in it. So searching for router table will return posts that have the word "router" in it as well as posts that have the word "table". This is not very useful!

So, to solve this problem, you can require that all of your search terms appear in the same post. To do this, you add a plus sign (+) directly before the word, like so:

+router +table

(Notice there is no space between the + and the beginning of the word.)

This will search for "all posts with the words 'router' AND 'table'." And this is usually what you want.

Re: Tips for Searching the Forums

Is there a way to restrict the search result to show only the initial post from each matching thread?

If I do a title search, it is very redundant to get a result for every posting in that thread in the search result. And I can not see at a glance all of the relevent threads without paging through them.

Re: Tips for Searching the Forums

I put a - sign in front of RE instead of a + sign and it only returns the first post.
Hope this helps

Sounds useful. What does RE means?

Re: Tips for Searching the Forums

When you post a reply to another post, the default subject line starts out "Re:". So if you exclude "Re" from your search, that helps remove replies.

I believe you need to include the colon (e.g. "-re:") or it will not show any items with words containing "re" ("were", etc.).

Does anyone know if there are plans for the site to support RSS feeds? Or maybe it already does and I am missing something.

Re: Tips for Searching the Forums

Is there a way to search the archives? I am looking for a post that occured back in 2003. Are threads that old even kept in archives?

Thanks
John

Re: Tips for Searching the Forums

I think threads expire after 1 year of inactivity. Some sections of the forumare less than that (swap and sell 30 days and off topic 7 days?)

Believe you are right. Just hoping that older threads were archived and we were able to access them. There is a lot of good information that has expired.

Thanks

Agreed, there are a lot of posts that get duplicated over the years and while new tools make old posts obsolete, general woodworking tips are almost never obsolete.

To the administrators:

Why is it that I spend so much time trying to search items on this forumn? You think you might clean-up this page so it's a bit clearer--get to the points quickly and consisly--as I don't like to spend 5 minutes sorting through posts/testing to figure out how to do a search for "Dremel"

This appears to be an archaic search function. Sorry for the rant!

Need help with Date Range

I'm not understanding the logic behind the date range. Can someone explain how it works?

New then Older then???

What do I enter if I want to search from today back one year?
Or something that I know was 9 months ago?

Do I use both fields?

Re: Need help with Date Range

The first scenario you propose- search newer than 1 year.

the 9 months ago thing... I'd search newer than 10 months and older than 8 months.

then again if you know that much specifics about it, you should be able to remember enough keywords and user's name that a date range that specific wouldn't be necessary.

This is my first view of this forum and if I understood the flavor of this thread correctly I hope I never ask what by some opinion is a stupid question. And BTW, my memory is not what it used to be. Please forgive me in advance.

Re: Need help with Date Range

Keith,

I suspect, then, that you misunderstood the flavor. My first reply was sarcastic in an effort to alleviate the apparent apprehension by the user to whom I responded. I intended to portray a sense of easygoing lightheartedness, hence the slapstick misspelling of "problem."

I guess in my second post you take issue with:

"then again if you know that much specifics about it, you should be able to remember enough keywords and user's name that a date range that specific wouldn't be necessary."

And I can assure you I wasn't challenging the validity of his problem. I did mean exactly what I said. If he remembered a post was exactly nine months ago, then the chances are good he remembers the topic pretty well. In that case, it is much more effective to search using key words than specifying date ranges. There are a lot of posts in a month, but probably not that many that include, say, "+mahogany +shellac +heirloom +nightstand -Re:"

I have not mastered the search form yet. Do you have instructions how to use this form? When I search, it doesn’t come close to what I was looking for.

Re: Tips for Searching the Forums

It's a little tricky, but I'll try to help.

Let's say that you want to find threads that discuss a router table.

You can't put in just the 2 words, as it won't work right.

I always check off " in subject and body", out of force of habit. And "Newer than 1 Year"

So here's what you have to type in the "Keyword search terms" box.

+router, +table, -re:

The plus signs mean to include the word. The commas and spaces are important.

And the -re: tells it that you want the 1st post only, and not all of the reply posts. (You will see them in order once you open that thread.)

This is what it will give you:

Need to build a router table, any recommendations? Woodworking Power Tools TrevorS 09/07/10 07:44 PM

shop redesign... moving tools out to the center.. Woodworking Power Tools BigDaddy 08/24/10 11:12 AM

Milwaukee 1.75 hp router advice Woodworking Power Tools AndyM 01/26/10 12:52 AM

Safety Glasses? Woodworking Power Tools Puffin 01/03/10 11:47 AM

Try it.

Hope that helps...

I'd be interested in seeing if there are other WNetters in my area. Can you search on location?

Re: Tips for Searching the Forums

Not at present. It's usually easiest to start a thread in one of the forums and let members chime in.

Some members prefer not to disclose their location, or they put only vague geographical information, so I think a search function there would be of limited value.
