Yeah, this is the way I'm leaning since the brain-trust isn't seeing an obvious solution either.

Notching a stud just feels wrong to me :-)

Now I am going to have to chop out almost the entire sole plate in that cavity to run the 3.25x10" duct (don't worry Snipe, I had it handled!). I have a big ole Simpson Strongtie ready to repair the plate. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get the required 16 (!) 16d nails into the tie-strap tho.

Fingers crossed no surprises in the crawlspace.
