I dont buy hardwood at a big box store. I buy it from a mill, or at a hardwood dealer.

Ive always said its silly people pay the prices at the borgs. I always get the argument that its all they can get. Crap. Even online retailers like Woodworkers source for instance, is far less of a gouge. Plus, the stuff at the borgs isnt even nice stock (anyone that says it is, has low standards)

I'd never buy lumber from Woodcraft. Way overpriced and horrible, limited selection. Same goes for HD and Lowes. I'm surprised you can't find walnut for a decent price. Since you've cited Manassas to Myrtle Beach, I'd guess there is more than on mill in North Carolina that will sell at a decent price.

I agree

Craig's list can be a great source for locating lumber mills. I have several within an hour and half drive. Some of them, you have to pick through the piles, but there is one where you can pretty much pick the boards off the top and be happy.

Price for poplar has gone up over the past few years from $1 bft to $1.70. The local builder's supply carries it for $2.80 a bft. If I need 1 or 2 boards, it makes sense to go to the builder's supply as it saves gas and time.

Lowes poplar cost over $5 bft. That's more expensive then nice walnut or cherry at the local mills.

Heck, I purchased a very nice lot of mahogany off ebay and had it shipped and total cost per bft was less then $3

The price of their walnut is very similar to their pine trim. I was able to buy the same base shoe and baseboards from a local mill/lumber yard for nearly half the price of what HD offered it for. I did have to travel 15 minutes further and wait longer to be loaded but the savings was substantial. The BORG is similar to a QT or other convenience store for the most part.

Someone must be buying the $19 walnut and if not, I doubt it will be offered for very long.

I'm wondering if they will offer closeouts when it doesn't sell. It's far too expensive for that, even in an area with a lot of disposable income. That's how I got the plywood for well below market value. Maybe I'll be able to pick this up.

Then again, all of their other overpriced lumber sells, but there has to be a limit on this.

Have you bought from them (and had it shipped)? How did that work out?

I have bought lumber from Steve Wall for about 20 years. It is top notch. I really like those packages of shorts. The price is right if you have small projects that do not need long pieces.

I think they have the option of an "extra" wood that is of local value- for example, here my Home Depot carries teak...

...and yes, it's stupidly marked up over lumberyard rates, though I did find a couple of twisted pieces in the clearance bin (spray painted ends purple) at 75% off and bought them.
