What's available gets a chance. Yours looks like that magnolia - "tulip poplar" - stuff.  True poplars from cottonwood to those using the common name poplar, are quite a bit different.  Hairy, and unforgiving of dull tools.

I turn bass, which seems similar to the tulip-poplar.  Soft, but makes pretty work.

I have also but in the raw wood form from the tree.  I posted my weed pots with the weeds in them here.

I really like the box and how it turned out.

I like to turn popular (tulip popular), not much in grain but turns easy an takes texturing well.
Here tulip popular is very different from magnolias (which is also called Bay Tree).
Probably lots of different species and different names in various parts of the country.

It is a member of the magnolia family.  As cottonwood is a member of the willow family.
