I was in my Lowes this morning and spotted this. Strike me as a good deal if your in the market. If someone wants one and can't find it, my store had one left...I'd be glad to pick it up and ship it (if it's still there). Ohio has 7 % sales tax in my county.

What was the price in your store? If you select different stores on lowes.com the price can change.
Edit: I see it is $54 in the Wapakoneta OH store - in my neck of the woods it is closer to $90. Must be a regional deal.

Sometimes these price reductions move through their chain in an odd fashion...may show up around you soon. The Wapak store was where I saw it....labelled as clearance.

FYI---here in northern Calif it's $85.45. The picture is obvious, but no where in the title or specs does it say it's a dado set? You'd think they'd at least specify number of chippers, shims and capacity.

I didn't count the chippers, but it will go to 7/8" (per the box) and has no shims. I still think it would be a nice set if someone needed one. I will admit the reviews they have are not flattering, and frankly a little surprising. CMT has always been known for top flight stuff, and this set was labeled as Italian manufacturer. As for Lowes' half arse description, well, this is Lowes we're talking about.

No question it's a bargain price compared to Freud or Forrest----but having wasted money on cheap dado sets before, I'd be cautious about poor reviews----and no shims either???

The CMT at Lowe's looks to be modeled after the Freud "Professional" Dado (SD208), which has regularly been in the $85 to $95 range since I bought one in 2001. I've seen it clearanced as low as the $45 range. The Freud Super Dado is showing at $200 on Amazon, and has been selling in the $180-$200 range for as long as I can remember....don't recall any real great deals on that one.

Interesting. I have been watching this in my local store. It's still $85. I checked every other store nearby and it's $54. I don't really need a third set but it is father's Day.

I found a super inexpensive 8" set online made by Oshlun years ago. I figured for $60 it was worth a shot. I was and still am blown away. Try looking up Holbren tools; they sold me one, shipped it for free, and had the best price.
I have cross cut perfect dados through tons of import ply. Very nice.

Hi Cian - LOL!
Not in the market for a full dado set; already have a 6" Freud (Super Dado) on my old TS which I now use only for that purpose. The new Freud 'box joint' set is easily installed on my new TS and I've used it for several different purposes beyond just making the finger joints - a nice option to own; so at the moment I can cut widths of various sizes on the 2 TSs w/o much hassle in changing blades. Really wish someone else was amped on the Oshlun! It has shims, and cuts clean from 1/4" to 15/16" with everything inbetween. I have owned three of them so I could rotate out while doing a production box-joint job...they are the bomb for the price, and would be the bomb still for twice as much!

A lot of folks here have and like the Oshlun sets. Nice deal on sale, but I'd be less excited to pay twice the price. Woodnet member "Lumberyard" took some pics of cuts in plywood from the Oshlun vs cuts from the Delta/DeWalt 7670 (it's ~$80-$110, has very nice shims, and a great carrying case). Once the price exceeds the 7670 set, I'd look for a deal on a premium set like the Dadonator, Dado King, Freud SD508, or Ridge Carbide Dado Master.

I had an older dado, not a CMT, but at the time a well regarded brand name. It also did not have the chippers like most better ranked blades do today. I`ll always vote for the chippers versus the 4 blade stackers. Unlike the Freud stacked box joint blade which firmly locks, mine tended to move around even after tightening as much as I could, and this, and maybe other factors made for a so so dado.
I see that Middletown has it for $67.48 and, Centerville has it for $53.99 if you are so inclined, and live nearby. Further South in Mason it`s $80 sum-thing.

Currently on sale for 20% off. Brings it to about $90.
The cmt is listed as $85 at my store. At $35 I'd clear them out if only to resell.

Yep, $35.99. I guess they still had it because someone just left the old $53.99 sticker on it. Still only had one set. I asked the cashier to scan it first, telling her the internet showed it at $35.99 and that's what it scanned at. That price puts it close to the regular price of the HF set ($30, I think)...though in all fairness, that set does have shims! Hmmm, you know..maybe I should have asked Lowes if they would take today's HF 25% off coupon.

I think someone posted here in the past that the Lowes store managers had some discretion as to when they dropped the prices the company sets up on clearance items. But it sure seems strange that the prices vary so widely.

I found a set at my Lowes for $35, but it wasn't orange. My set DOES have shims though. They were between the outside cutters. Makes me wonder if someone bought your set and didn't put the shims back when they returned it.

You are correct, the set does come with shims. I hadn't even looked in there for them. My apologies to everyone for the mistake. On another note, you comment about the set not being the orange one confused me. The, low and behold, I saw the same set at my Lowes (yep, it wasn't supposed to be there) and it wasn't orange either. Yet it has the same bar code, stock number and such. The only difference I could find was that the silver-ish set is depicted as "made in the EU", while the orange set specifically says "made in Italy". Interesting....
Edit in: BTW, my store just went back to the $89 price, after I had bought the second set. I'll be offering one of them in S&S (at cost).

Edit to add: The Irwin dado set is $99.

Now that's interesting. The new Irwin Marples saw blades line is made in Italy too....it's good to see Irwin getting back into some decent blades. Several years ago they discontinued the excellent "Woodworking" series that was made by Leitz in Germany, and haven't offered any furniture grade blades since.

Cary, I just looked at the Irwin set today.....looks all the world like CMT is making them for Irwin. One thing I noticed: there are only 3 chippers, in place of the others there are washers (Irwin calls them spacers). The chippers have a polished finish that's much nicer than the black oxide the CMT set has.

They did however have a Mirbo(sp) set on clearance for 20 bucks.
I did not look at the blades. Nice case

Bought one on Friday for $35.99 (silver one). Went back today and they had an orange one on the rack (wasn't there Friday) so, I had to buy it. Only 2 of the ten local Lowe's had them for this price. I may get the next closest one to do a price match, depends on the manager on duty.

That was what happened to me, I bought one on line, it turned out to be the silver-ish one. They still had an orange one on the rack, so I bought it.....then the on line price went back to $89. The orange one still had the $53.99 sticker on it, but it scanned at the $36 price.

That e-bay deal with free shipping would be hard to beat for someone not near a Lowes (or even if you are near a Lowes). Wonder what he paid for them? If anyone is still interested, apparently some of the Lowes still have some being discounted. I just saw on another forum one person pic'd a receipt where he paid $32.39! I have another store near me that just went down to $53, and I expect them to be at $36 in another week or 2, they have 3 sets. On another note, I did a test cut with mine, and then compared it to a new Freud SD508 (my back up set, unused) and an old, just sharpened (3rd time) SD 508. The cuts in a splinter prone piece of plywood were indistinguishable among the 3. All three had very smooth bottoms and no chip out on the veneer. The CMT set did have barely higher "devil's ears" but still you had to look very hard to see them. This set is a winner!

Just picked one up, this is a nice 8" dado, with shims, list $89. I don't need an extra one, but for this price, worth it as spare or for my son. There is another set at the Clarksville, indiana Lowe's store. Ray

Some of the stores are selling the CMT dado sets at $15. They are also selling some CMT 10 inch 50T and 80T thin kerf blades for $12-$15 and 12inch 96T CMT miter blades for $15.

After spending too much time lurking here last night, I decided to use the Lowes link to figure out which of the stores near me had the dado sets and at what price. It turned out that the next-to-nearest store had the set listed at $39.59. Every other store within 20 miles was higher, some as high as $70+. So while out running errands LOML and I stopped in and bought one, with two remaining. This will be my second dado set, with the Freud set for more precise cuts, probably.)
While we were there, I discovered, to the chagrin of LOML, that all the CMT blades were being closed out, so we went home with a buncha stuff.

And . . . .

An interesting day.

Just wait until you see how the CMT set cuts, I'll bet it's every bit as good (maybe better) as whatever you are currently. It cuts every bit as good as a new SD508 (at least mine does).

I had a set in my hands about 3 weeks back for $35 and put them back because I already had a set that rarely saw use.

Dang you guys! I quit visiting here about 4 or 5 months ago mainly because I just haven't had the time to actually DO any woodworking so I started to find reading about it discouraging. But also to a lesser degree because it always seems to cost me money and dangit I'm back for 5 minutes and already have the credit card out!!
I did in store pickup at my local store for $32.39 and I guess I'll see if there are any other goodies there in the morning when I go pick it up.
In all seriousness I hope this is a decent set as my freud is in dire need of sharpening.

Is the online price accurate or should I walk in and have them scan one? They're listed as $54 online for my store. I'll grab one at the lower $30's but not at $54.

The scan is free....no harm trying.

So far I've found the online price to be more accurate than what's in the store. When my local store had them for $36 on,line, the tag still said $54. They scanned at $36.

About a week after this thread began, I went ot the local Lowes and found six of them in stock, three orange and three grey. Bought the orange one and it sat on the shelf until this past week when I tried it out and am very pleased. I have been using a Freud 208, which I was very happy with, but in my opinion, this one is better. For the price, it is a steal.

You paid too much :-)
I paid $8 something for the first one and $13 something for the second. My "local"store still has them - at $53.98 - and won't price match the other Lowes 2 miles away. I suppose I really don't need more than two anyway.

The SD208 and the CMT set are extremely similar....any chance the CMT's advantage was due to being sharper?

I ccompared the CMT set to a new SD508 on a very splintery scrap of luan ply. There was an almost imperceptible difference between the cuts, and that was in the tear out of the surface veneer. It was very slight, but in the favor of the SD508; of course, it has twice as many teeth.

Fred - I suspect if you do more cuts in more materials, you'll find that the 508 has the upper hand, but that's just speculation. There are many more variables in play than just tooth count, but CMT is so close to Freud in design and quality, that there's little reason that a 12T/2T CMT set should outperform a the 24T/4T Freud set anymore than the SD208 would outperm the SD508. But it wouldn't be the first time I've been surprised by a blade's performance. Since I haven't been able to score one of the CMT sets on the cheap, I'll have to count on you and others to do the testing!

I agree, and wasn't suggesting the CMT set is superior to the 508, or any other premium set. But it's a very good set and the Lowes clearance makes it a steal. The reason I'm commenting on the quality of the cut it makes is that early on this thread there was a little skepticism about the quality of the set, etc.etc., whether it was really a CMT set, and so on.

Possible. Evaluation is certainly subjective, but I don't recall my 208 producing dados quite as good even when it was new. Not knocking the 208. Was always good enough for my needs and feel it is a good value in the $90-100 range, but I personally like the CMT better, especially at the Lowes price.

For anyone who might want a set cheap, there is a guy on lumberjocks who had picked up some sets for $12 and was offering them to others.
Post is about a day old. From posted responses, 2 had sent him PMs. Maybe he still has 1 set left.

Offer still stands to ship out some of these dados. .. have 3 available...picked them up for $12. So, you cover that and shipping. It’ll fit in one of those USPS medium boxes, whatever those run. If not, ... will have a lifetime of Dados, which is not a bad thing either.

Yes, a router bit.
Seriously, I don't mind the liittle bat's ears, as it gives someplace for excess glue to go. However, if I'm cutting a dado that is going to show in the finished product, a router made dado is the best for me.

Yep, I took him up on his offer. For $25 shipped:

I'm set on dados for now, but I'll keep checking my lowes out to see if/when they drop the price more than what it currently is ($53.98).

The little bat ears at the bottom of the cut? I think my Freud does, but they are pretty small. I don't remember what I paid for mine, but it was a lot less than Acme Tool off their shelf. They do have a pretty good assortment of router bits and a few shaper cutters, but on the pricey side. Better to plan ahead and order from the net, or Grizzly, their shaper cutters, the green ones, have worked fine for me. I'm pretty sure I got my Dado set from amazon, or somebody like them.

All dado sets do this to some degree; the better sets minimize it.

I'd be more interested in the crosscut quality of a dado set, since that would show more. Do the cheaper sets do a worse job on this than the better ones?

From Fred's post on LJ:
"I’ve tried a test cut with them. The comparison was to a new SD 508, and an old SD508 that had been recently sharpened. Take a look, the CMT set showed only marginal more tearout, and this is on a very splinter prone piece of ply."

The CMT set also cut very slightly higher devils ears than the Freud 508 set...when comparing the difference remember that Freud set has twice as many teeth on the blades and the chippers. The CMT set is clearly a steal at the Lowe's clearance prices, and probably a good buy at regular price.
