So, I have this very old extension ladder...
      #5996366 - 07/18/12 11:51 AM

that I bought about 30 years ago. It's a Werner 28 footer (homeowner model) , and the little plastic caps on the end of the ladder have long since broken. Now if you lean it against the house, it gouges whatever the ends rest on. So, last week I bought a pair of those foam mittens that fit on the end to solve my problem. I would like them to be permanently in place on the end of the ladder...you think if I filled them with that polyurethane foam stuff and then stuck them on the ladder they would hold there. Better ideas? Should I just leave them as is?

How about double stick carpet tape or something like that?
Not sure if a glue would work very well with foam/rubber that they are made of.

I was referring to that Great Stuff insulation foam (or whatever brand I can get) , thinking it would fill all the voids between the mittens and the aluminum. The expansion of it is just something I'd have to live with.

I suppose you could measure the ends and ask Werner if they had anything that would fit.

Don't laugh, but I saw one of these "tips" where they used a pair of old tennis shows to cover the ladder ends.

Another idea----do any of these products they sell for covering various tool handles have any density to them---I've seen the type where you dip the handle into this goo and it remains coated.

Spray the foam and see ow it works. This ladder owes you nothing.

No argument there.

You got nothing to lose!
Give it a try and see what happens.

A little foam hanging out won't hurt a thing and you can cut/peel off the excess. MEK will eat it up if you want to get rid of it and start again.

in a pinch we use gloves and duct tape. I think your foam idea should work fine.

I have a ladder like this that I have wrapped strips of an old bath towel around with duct tape. I think it's been 3 years since I did that and I haven't even re-taped. That being said, I think your expansion foam idea sounds like a winner. Silicone would also work if the boots have a snug fit.

Why not cut a couple pieces of plywood to kind of fit like the plastic ones and fasten it to the ladder. Then if you wanted you could still put on the "plastic" bumpers, but they would be supported.

Sounds like you would still have a hard surface to scar walls, siding, whatever.

I use the old towels and duct tape trick also. I do like the idea of the foam though.

Spray foam would work. Or just drill a small hole through the pads & the ladder & tie them on.

Spray foam would be the choice. It's polyurethane based and acts as an adhesive. Same like gorilla glue, just easier to apply to large cavities.
