Only an engineer would come up with this one. I don't suppose a brass bushing would be sufficient? Does it need to be a sealed bearing?

My only serious question is, why?

Oh Man never thought of motorization, we gotta have a name the device thread for this

I`m pretty sure the first 25 I came up with DO NOT go hand in hand with the family forum rules we have abouts here.

I think you should also have a soft stop function so it doesn't spin for a long time. And a grease fitting so that you can lube the bearings to keep them quiet.

They remodeled the JCPenney in the mall near me. Men's room has fancy stainless-steel motorized toilet paper dispensers. I was mesmerized by them. Apparently you can only wave your hand under them so many times before it cuts you off.

Well....the reasons are to reduce the noise and to please the wife.

About 1 roll a day.

So sealed ball bearings, a motor with a brake and a remote. Hard to justify the remote.

Some kind of music could be a nice touch, maybe pop goes the weasel....

Well, you could use a regular, spring-loaded, toilet paper bar and inset a couple of roller bearings into the side-pieces. Dovetailing the the side-pieces into the wall piece would be a sturdy yet simple approach.

Alternatively, IIRC, some of the assisted living (what we used to call handicapped-accessible) toilet paper cross-bars are weighted metal and eccentric from the shaft so that it is easier to tear off pieces one-handed. I believe that some of those cross-bars had bearings in them.

FWIW

After thought: depending on your wife's sense of humor/whimsy...

One of the standard high school/ middle school shop projects used to be a kitchen wall gadget that held a pencil and a roll of note paper that unrolled toward the wall, down in front of a flat board where you made notes, and then behind a small rectangular strip that served to cut the paper. You could scale that up for your bathroom wall. She would always have a pencil handy for doing the quizzes in the women's magazines.

Seriously though, by the very nature of it's mechanics, wouldn't it have to dispense from OVER rather than from UNDER? Well, not real seriously.

LIL.

How about this design.

Two rollers, one in front, one behind.
mount bicycle pedals on the front roller.
thread the paper onto the second roller with a half twist.
turn back to a front take up reel.

Now, you can pedal, rewind, use one side of the paper and run the second side thru.

saving paper, no engery consumed.....

ITS GREEN!!!

Side note. If you're making too much noise passing......you may need more fiber or a louder radio.

It needs a limiter to prevent someone from taking too much paper. It would pay for itself in a month just with the tp savings in my house.

How about a device so that if someone touches it while it's spinning, there's a loud BANG and the whole roll disappears below the holder.
Of course, the mechanism destroys that roll of paper, but on the plus side, if you are too startled, you're already on the toilet...

Paul
Thanks for bringing it home to the wood shop.

The noise I was thinking about is the wuppa wuppa noise of a fast spinning and unbalanced roll. Other than that my dear is virtually silent.

The dispense control can be a 3" lever, pull harder for faster, push to rewind.

Hmmm.....might want an outfeed table and a micro cutoff saw.

I can hardly see where the word STOP would apply to that device, but it would clearly be a big $$$ machine, think of the Millions people spend yearly to get to that exact same place using pills, elixers, and what not..

If that is all you want, all you have to do is fill in the space between the roll and the holder. Lathe out a spacer or just make a hexagon oversleeve and your done. Not elegant, but done.

Can't help with the odor though.

The noise I was thinking about is the wuppa wuppa noise of a fast spinning and unbalanced roll.

If that is all you want, all you have to do is fill in the space between the roll and the holder...

You could also just stuff that space with some of the closed-cell hot water pipe insulation to dampen the sound (not the paper, which is best left dry).

Well....the reasons are to reduce the noise and to please the wife.

About 1 roll a day.

One roll a day? How many people are using that bathroom? If you really want to please your wife, maybe you should build another bathroom!
