I have an old bench that I use for demos occasionally. I have been through the entire tail vice a few times making little tweeks to help it work more smoothly. Still haven't found the solution. With all the talk of mutton tallow I was wondering if this may be a good lube for the wood screw and the rest of the mechanism. Your thoughts? Anything better?

I think the tallow would just gum it up. I rub an old paraffin candle on all my wooden threads, it makes them operate smoother and doesn't attract dust and dirt. Use a knife to taper the candle to get into the thread.

Mark,
I agree with John, wax, either a paraffin or paste wax does a good job on wood threads.

+3 on wax
Arlin
edit: I do like paste wax the best because it does not have build up and I think it slides easier.

Tallow would just attract and hold sawdust in this application...I much prefer any lube containing Moly-disulfide..the type that has a drying vehicle as the carrier {usually in a spray can}...absolutely no lube better for metal-on metal..It is so slick {without being wet} that it is dangerous to use on the sear of semi-automatic firearms...The reduction in friction caused by the Moly powder can cause them to go automatic....Good stuff!! Looks like graphite, but it is far superior to it.

Well
I was asuming the vise was wooden, however, with Jacks post, that would be good for a metal Vise.

Use Slip It. It was developed for wooden drawer slides and it does not gum up. It will make it so slick it will amaze you! Have a Blessed day. George
