Well, my username here is my real name. I'm Matt. Air Force for 13 years. Software Engineer for the past 7. Just recently decided to get back into woodworking after a 15 year hiatus. I answer to lots of things. Matt, Matt-man, Gatman, and I answer to my wife for everything. Looking to get my first lathe real soon after Christmas. Just don't know which one it's going to be. Versatile but not a tiny one. I already know I want to do pens and bowls. Not large bowls, mind you. Not looking for my 'last lathe' just a pretty good one.

Real name, Reed. Been turning almost 10 years now. My flat work is falling off. robo hippy came from a construction job years ago. Would twirl my hammer around and try to get it into the hammer loop on my belt (like robo cop), and was wearing a big knee brace, one guy on the crew shouts out "hey, its robo hippy", and I kind of liked it. I am/was kind of a hippy type, at least some what alternative.

Todd Glover, 41 only been turning a couple of months and never thought I'd like it but I find it strangely relaxing........
That is until a Yellow Cedar pen blank with 10 different kinds of awesome figure explodes as I take my final couple of passes .
Especially when it's for my boss who is giving it away as a present to a friend she's going to visit in South Africa.........
Yeah, until that happens I love it .

I'm Doug. I've been turning for a little shy of a year. I haven't really settled on my niche in turning. Every time I try something new I get real excited. Then move on to something else. Story of my life.
I'm a retired Air Force Reserve loadmaster. I work for the Postal Service. My daughter gave me the moniker "clovishound" as I have found a disproportionate share of Clovis era stone tools diving the rivers here in SC.

Johnny England most call me Johnny. Will be 53 next month and feeling it. Been turnin on and off for a few years. Started in the seventh grade got sidetracked with girls and cars, yes in that order. I am over cars although I have and still do made a good living working on them. Girls, well we wont go there. I don't think I'll ever get over turnin. I still enjoy flat work too.
AKA England141 and England_At_Work depending on which form and whether I'm on the computer at work or at home as they have different settings.
Right now I am into making Cartage pens with deer antler. Anybody know where I can get some antlers? I hate to pay for them, but I have.

Bill Nance, 48. I've been turning for less than a couple years, not counting the 35-year hiatus since junior high wood shop. I picked up a great condition Rockwell 46-111 to play with and (I thought) use up various flatwork offcuts... uh huh, sure.
I tend to float between many different types of projects, from big home construction/renovation stuff, to cabinets and other flatwork, and whatnot. Along with getting sucked into the turning vortex, I also got bit recently by the steep slope of old machinery restoration. So I do a little bit of lots of things, none of them particularly well. Turning is generally a relaxing diversion and "play" activity when I'm tired or frustrated of working on the never-ending project list.
Oh yeah, I'll generally answer to most any name, some printable, some not.

Kala Raymond - I started turning a few months before I quit my job as a software engineer to apprentice to a master furniture builder a little over a year ago. Thought it would be a good way to supplement my meager income as an apprentice. HAHAHAHA. Spent 5000 + so far and maybe sold 3000. But I don't regret it at all. Now that furniture making is my job I needed a new hobby anyways.
Aloha,

Archie England, 49 yo, a teacher/preacher. Been turning for about a year. Just graduated from a Jet 12-20 to an older Delta 16-42 vs, and loving it. Learning from a fantastic "rocket scientist" turned bowl turning guru (on a VBmaster). Actually got into lathe turning by accident: I needed handles for my odd and end chisels and stuff that I was restoring for hobby furniture building. I had gotten into handtools because I fear/respect TS, jointer, etc. and b/c I hate sanding--hence, hand planes to the rescue.

Real name's Dave and I've started turning a few months ago..... been lured here from the flat side. I started off trying to get my wife interested in turning so when I needed something "turned", I'd keep it in the family. Well, it looks like that backfired...... now, I'm behind in furniture and home improvement projects. Good news is.... the wife is interested and starting to ask questions. So now I just need to plan my time better............... well, actually..... ALOT better. Oh and I'm an old 45 yrs. young......

I'm Cian.
Pronounced "Shawn."
It's an Old Gaelic Irish spelling.
Problem is, I'm not Irish.
I'm Filipino.
And why is it do they spell Filipino with an "F" when the Philippines is with a "PH"?
Anyway, I'm a ripe 37 years old.
I've been equipped to turn for about a year.
I've been turning for negative 6 months.
(I figure I'll start turning in possibly six months if I ever get my shop done. )

Hi, My name is John. I'm 46. I was at a craft show in Hawaii 9 years ago. I was blown away by the wooden bowls. The very next day I was looking for my 1st lathe. I have alot more ideas in my head on what I would like to make than the time and energy to do so. I have met quite a few woodnetters. A good bunch of guys.

My name is Pete. I'm 53 years old. Keepsake was the name of my sideline wedding photography business years back (Keepsake Imaging). My family nicknamed me "Beaver" (long before the TV show ) cause I liked to play in the water and mud, hence my avatar.
I've been turning for 1 1/2 years. I'm on a deliberate hiatus from that to get some things in order, including a top to bottom home renovation. I probably learned half of what I know from this forum. I miss turning a lot and hopefully will be back at it in the new year.

I have the same bowl on the lathe for the past week for the better half has me finishing the basement. Been spoiled by my mentor (Dan) and his Vicmarc vl300 lathe. I turn on a woodfast and a jet mini and dreaming of the vl300.

Got serious about turning 3 years ago and the local woodturners club started meeting in my school shop a year and a half ago. We now have 5 lathes in my school shop including a new mustard monster. I am about a month away from having power in my home shop. Starting 1/3/08 the local power company will put underground to my shop for free. Chiristmas will be a little late for me this year. Jack

Jeff Crenshaw - 35 - Software Developer - turning for -5 days (yes, that's negative 5!). I'm expecting a Woodcraft GC under the tree which will be used on a Jet mini-lathe.
This year while doing the Christmas decorations LOML wanted some "height" for the mantle (tall candlestick holders, etc.), but couldn't find anything she liked. I made the comment, "Gee, if I had a lathe, I could turn you anything you want." And so it began...
I spend most of my time in the Hand Tools forum, so I know all about the slippery slopes around here - and actually I'm thinking most of my projects to begin with will be tool handles.
Take care,
Jeff

hahahaha we could probably start a new thread with how our wives accidentally gave us excuses to buy our lathes.
I was turning on a Shopsmith ER10. When I brought in a bowl to show her she said, "It's nice, but can't you turn anything bigger?"

My real name is Michael - another software developer, 40 years old and been turning for about 2 months. I started making custom joysticks as an offshoot of my favorite pastime, arcade machines. Then I started looking for a way to make my creations stand out a bit. I came up with the idea to use wooden tops to match the case. I purchased a Jet 1014VS and started down the slippery slope.

Really?
My real name is Gary; folks call me Gary, Gary G, Mr. G, or Bubba.
Been doing flatwork a while. I turned one or two little things some time ago but didn't really use a lathe. I've been turning pens just over a year -- Dec. 10th '07, I made my first one. Last month, I turned my first lidded box and a couple 'o ugly goblets. This year, I expect to try more experiments with the lathe. Lookin' forward to visitin' here more too.
Merry Christmas y'all. Gary

I'm Doug, and I've been turning about a year, mostly bowls though I still mostly make furniture. 57 years and still working in software, BI products. Woodworking is great when you get tired of 0 and 1

My mother calls me Steven but most folks leave it at Steve. Started woodturning in my uncles shop in about 1954 which must make me one of the old guys that looks at this site. One time I made a billy club for a cop in Washington DC. Made it out of Hedge because he said his kept breaking when in use. However he found out that if the club does not break when in use the paperwork will go on for a long time. So it never got used for its intended purpose. I kept it for years and tried to break it many times with no success. Wonder where it is now?? :

Kevin Gilmore, 45, been turning for -6 months, waiting for a tail stock on a Powermatic 90. But I'm keeping busy making boxes and frames till I get one...
Got interested in WW'ng because of a turner (can't remember his name) who made spectacular pens, stoppers, and ornaments. That's what I want to learn, and with all the expert help on this forum I'm sure I'll have no problems.
Oh yeah, work for Bosch as an IT guy...nice discount on tools too...wife rolls her eyes a lot when I come home, "Guess what I bought today!"

My real name's Raney. Thus the screen name (one of the advantages of an unusual name).
I started turning about 3 weeks ago and I'm still trying hopelessly to convince myself I'm not going to be a turner. That lathe (and chucks.. and thompson tools... and Scorpion/stinger hollowing tools... and bowl blanks... and sanding gear... and longworth chuck... and Robust-envy) is just a passing phase. It's just to supplement flat-work with things like drawer pulls and tool handles... I'm sure of it

I'm Tom, and have been turning on and off for over 40 years on the same old 1944 Delta 1460 that my granddaddy brought home from the war plant he worked in. I find turning relaxing, though I don't consider myself terribly good at it.
I'm an engineer, designing large machinery, mostly tower cranes for high steel construction, but sometimes other nifty things, like this big green monster for the FAA. If you look real close, you can just see me in the white on-board control room, saying "cheese".

Dan Forman, 56, mental health counselor. Like many others, I first thought about making file and chisel handles and such. As it turns out, I've been mostly kept busy with making handles for lathe tools so far, but managed to work a couple of practice bowls and a pen in so far, want to work into vases and hollow forms.

Dale Bright here, been turning for almost a year. I already have 2 lathes, 3 chucks, 24 turning tools and lots of accessories. I have very little wood working experience. I really enjoy making natural edge bowls. I live in Purcellville, VA and I am 56 years old. My nickname (frog21) is from my days in the military.

Hi, I'm Brodie Brickey I've been turning since 2003. I work as a programmer here in SoCal and look for new project kits for turners.
If you've seen the coffee mug Malcolm Tibbetts turned in the Winter 2007 AAW mag, the insert is me, the awesome turning is Malcolm.
I turn mostly from logs or solid block, but I'm getting more into staved and segmented work especially for project kits as it sets them off better.

John Redding - 44 years old and been turning about 3 years off and on when not doing flatwork. Still suck at it, but have a ton of fun. My neighbor gave me the screen name when I was first starting out woodworking about 5 years ago - I really needed one (there's something to that measuring idea I hear about every so often).

Rick, 58. Been turning a whole month, now. A friend that has been turning 2 months, got me started. I can see the center of the vortex looming, as the flat work has taken a back seat. I took a begining class and have joined a club. I have a Jet mini and a Nova chuck.

I'm Scott - thus, the nickname Scooter which was shortened to Scoots by some friends a few years back. I'm 34 and have been turning for 3 years, though my turning time has always been sporadic. For example, I haven't touched the lathe in about 2 months.
I live in the thriving suburb of Frisco, Texas, just north of Dallas and the better-known suburb of Plano. I'm a closing manager for a real estate investment manager, meaning I lead real estate deals from a letter of intent to the final closing.

Better late than never. Name's Kevin - 'eyeyellow' is how you pronounce my last name. Live in Nor Cal and have worked in the wine industry for almost 22 years. Mostly a lurker here. Been doing general flatwork for 6 or 7 years but only turning since about August - they don't call it the vortex for nuthin'! Made some pretty decent (by kindergarten standards) stem vases for Christmas gifts. I continue to practice and learn how to use the tools. Dang woodturnin' is harder than it looks!

Gordon here. Most of my friends call me Gordo, some use Gordy (they're mostly Yankees for some reason). 57 YO retired Army (Aviation). Been turning for about 8 years, mostly small stuff; pens, peppermills and the like. Convinced my wife to let me buy my first lathe by telling her that I could save money by turning the bun feet for a bedroom suite that I was going to make for our daughter. Bought the Jet Mini and started turning pens and never did get the furniture made! I still hear about that to this day.
Nice to make everyone's acquaintenance.

I'm almost finished building the table for it. I'll be a turner soon, but I've been playing around with general woodworking for a couple of years. I'm a retired university professor looking for relaxation. Maybe I should have taken up golf instead. As much as I try to think through what I'm about to do, I still leave out one thing and make more firewood.

Tom Clevenger, 47 y/o retired Fire Captain from So Cal. I retired early at the age of 42 and have been enjoying living in rural NE Oregon. I have an older Delta 12" Gap Bed lathe but have not used it much. I just bought a wolverine setup to sharpen my basic set of tools and plan to do more turning. I do woodworking on the side for some extra money but just recently started doing turnings for a local artist. I am a novice at turning and have much to learn but do enjoy it. I spent the day building a wall rack to hold my lathe tools.

I think I filled out my profile way back when.
I'm Matthew, 31, out of medical residency for a year and a half.
Started woodworking building a cradle at 12 years old for my then nearly-newborn brother. Put the craft on hold then until I made a simple bookcase for my girlfriend about 7 or 8 years ago; now she's my lovely wife. Later built the crib used by my four children and have now been delayed from furniture-building, except for a quick bathroom vanity, whilst bogged down in plain old home carpentry with a master suite renovation. As long as I keep producing around the house my wife is indulgent on tool purchases. (She says she's done "producing.")
I'm still buying used iron as much as possible, what with the kids and school debt, etc. She's excited about the lathe and wants to learn to turn some ornaments next year.
I've ordered my first pen kit. Hope to post pics of a completed project in the near future.
Regards, Matthew.

I am Paul in Santa Rosa, CA (sonoma wine country about 50 miles north of San Fran). I am not to be confused with Troy/Chairman Kaga because I also answer to ,"coffee's ready" and "free wood". To make it easier, just say "Peet's Coffee" for me.
I started wood working in 1980-83 in woodshop and loved it from the start. Turning was always one of my favorite things. But aside from a few pieces and home improvement stuff was focused on other things up until early last year when I setup a dedicated woodshop. Like a surprising number in this thread I'm also in the IT/Software industry. I've gotten 3 of my kids into woodworking and it is great in a lot of ways.

(No, I am not female ) I have a lathe in my front hall that has not yet been taken out of the box - the tools won't arrive until a couple of weeks from now, and I have kitchen wall tiles to get up before the wet saw gets put away and the lathe gets put in. The last time I turned was on a metal lathe in 1963. LOML gave me $250 to get a mini because she saw me watching every turning thing I could find on cable. My moniker says it all (as does my avatar). Been doing flat work for about three years and TONS of home improvement forever. So far I am intrigued by bowls and other things of that nature, while long spindles (like table legs) don't grab me yet. I'll just have to see.

Even though I don't turn a lot, I have the bug and will some day jump off the cliff and buy a real lathe.
Name is Steve, 53 and feel 90 some days and 17 the other. Wife wonders if I'll ever grow up.
I've learned a lot here and expect that I'll learn a lot more.

Never turned a thing in my life, but i just bought a lathe because my wife wants a bedroom set that has turned pieces so it was cheaper to buy the lathe and learn how to do it than buy the turned pieces.

Good luck with that! Once you start buying turning tools there is no end.
Maybe instead of turning they should call it spiralling.

I was creative in picking out a user name. My user name is shawnhoefer and my real name is Shawn Hoefer. I know it'll confuse people some, but you'll get used to it. My nickname is Shawn. Sorry.
I live in Arkansas surrounded by wood... figured maybe I should learn to do something with it beside tossing hunks into the fireplace.

My real name is Orval but my wife did not like it, so she changed it to Whit about 58 years ago when I was in the Air Force. There everyone called me by my last name, Whitfield and she shortened to Whit. It has stuck. Even had Whit on my badge at work for 32 years in the semiconductor industry. Been turning off and on for 15 to 20 years. Still have a lot to learn. Whit

I'm Ryan 34, live in MN. I've been turning for about 6 months. Had the lathe for almost a year but it took me a while to build a stand for it. Recently joined a woodturning club and the slope just got a whole lot steeper (and more expensive)

I'm Steve.
I haven't really started turning yet. I turned 7 pens for a Freedom pen turn-a-thon last month and fell in love with it. Right now I'm covered up with projects so I haven't been able to pursue this new money pit, I mean, hobby.
I do have a Gift card and free shipping to Rockler that's burning a hole in my pocket and will probably be used to buy a pen starter kit and a white 100 Grit grinding wheel. Of course, I'll need new tools as the cheap Crapsman set that came with the free Lathe I got probably aren't worth much. Then I'll discover that I need a better lathe and then...........

Don - retired. Started turning pens a few months ago and am now hooked. Haven't turned since I was a kid back in the late 40's & 50's. My dad had both a wood and metal lathe. Sure wish I still had his metal lathe. Hope to get into some bowl turning also.
This is my first post here. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks...

Ok, this disproves the idea that woodworkers are old. I am one of two people who admitted to being 62 years old and I didn't notice anybody older. I AM NOT OLD !!! (at least that's what I keep telling myself.) I wonder, do really old people not use the Internet?

My name is Rick. I've been a police officer for 30 yrs now (come on with a last name like Crook, I had to). I've flown police aircraft, chased bad guys and generally have had a blast. I've been woodworking for many years now, still love it and still have all my fingers. I live in Henrico County, Virginia but will travel at the drop of a hat.

ps: This is my second try at this, the first one seems to have gone into the nether regions - so - if you see two postings from me please be gentle.

Surprise, my name is Vinny and I live in NY State, Long Island to be more precise. I hang out a lot in hand tools, where I've had a lot of laughs and received a lot of help. Have been very slowly building a hand tools shop in the garage, picked up a lathe (still boxed) a week or so ago. Im 56, or 57, never cared about age much, health cooked, head too i think. But trying to use working wood as therapy and meditation, turning too, hopefully a sitting activity for bad days - and to set what example I can for my teenage daughter. Something about small battles, and making things with hands, from mind and heart... I still work full time from home, lots of long days and weekends, but expect that will have to change a bit in the near future. I have had some help here already, and hope to make the time to need a lot more. Determined to learn enough to someday repay by passing some on...

Too old to come up with a catchy name. Most people call me Holt while my close friends and Gorilla Skiing buddies call me "Holta". Love to build furnature incorporating columns. Currently working on a pulpit with four columns. I have eight bowl blanks that are screeming, "me next, me next"! Between work and church I get only a day or so in the shop, but it is the best day. I have watched this group of misfits for almost a year, honestly...I think I am addicted. I have learned so much, just wish I had something to contribute.

One more geezer logging in. I'm Chuck O. ____ . Age 69, been a do-it-yourselfer since I got married and bought a house many years and houses ago. I inherited the value of doing things for yourself from my dad, who had to by necessity. In the early years, I had to as well. Retired 3 + years; former marine engineer/engineering supervisor. Recently started bowl turning on a 1979 Shopsmith; often hang out in the woodworking forum. Mainly make small stuff like stools and cutting boards in my small dedicated shop. I've made 4 or 5 small bowls out of blanks and am working on my second segmented bowl. (Just a few pieces - nothing like some of the artists are showing.) In warm weather, I turn into a golfer.

I have been lurking for a while and asking a few questions so I guess I should introduce myself.
Nothing tricky about the name. I am mostly a luthier but I also build a few boats. Like a lot of the folks in this forum, I picked up a lathe to turn tool handles. I avoided getting a lathe for years because lord knows I don't need another hobby. I am not feeling the pull of the vortex yet but I have only been turning for a few days.
In real life I do sales & marketing and for other fun race Flying Scot sailboats.

I've been on the forums a while - bought a used HF lathe last year to learn on - about ready and started researching (mostly by reading here as a lurker). I joined a local group and hope to get busy. Looks like fun and I'm looking forward to doing some turnings.

Real name is Terry. Work full time as a Firefighter/Paramedic. I'm a Captain so I have a lot of names that I cant put up here. (My crew secretly loves me tho I know). However I've been doing this so long now that I'm retiring anytime. I've got my time in and body can no longer take it. Real cushy State retirement. I've turning for about 100 years and am still trying to figure it out.

Hello all! My name is Chris and I love turning wood! I've been lurking here for quite a while. I am enjoying looking at all of your work and filing away ideas to "steal". My lathe is an older Craftsman. It serves the purpose, but I soon I will be in the market for a Jet Mini (or Midi) variable speed. I haven't learned to poop $100 bills yet, so...waiting...
I'll start another thread showing what I've been doing on the lathe.

Hi I'm Robert and I'm a toolaholic! I'm 51 and have two lathes a jet mini and a Powermatic 4224..... I know I know I went form mini to Maxi. What can I say I got a great deal on it. I do mostly flat work but I been getting more and more into turning. I can see why this is all a lot of people do it's addicting! I've been doing a few bowls and one project I did had a lot of spindles so far everything has turned out pretty good, maybe a little smaller than it started to but ok anyway. This forum has been a wealth of information for me and I really enjoy seeing what everyone has done.
Thanks, Robert

My name is Lonnie, and I've been turning about 25 years. Grey Mountain was my great-grandfather, who was a Mexican captive of the Comanches. He was captured around 1850 as a young lad of about seven, and spent the rest of his life with the Comanches, eventually being adopted into the tribe. I proudly use his name as my signature.

Steve Westfall is the name. I've been turning or turning at it for about 1 1/2 years. I've made a few nice things and a lot of "designer firewood", but I'm learning. Been interested in woodworking since JR. High. I'm 57 and retired so I've got the time now to make shavings. I'm also a Ham... KK7AP

Joe Pack. Real name, not someone else's. Turned a log into a toothpick, repeated process, then started making pens, keychains, etc....about 1,500 so far (FAR more keychains than pens), but I'm still working on it. People buy them (particularly the keychains), so I keep making them. 18 years old from the neck up, 57 years old from the neck to the top of the knees, 200 years old from the knees down.

Hi All. Andy Bacchi is my name. My wife and I have been in Vermont for 35 years now, and raised our three kids here. I'm a computer system programmer by design, and a tree herder by choice. They provide heat in winter, sweet syrup in spring and beauty all the time.
I've spent lots of time tending to the trees that share my space and I've even named a few of them. Gratefully, a tree's pace is easy to keep up with.

My name is Andy, though some call me Andrew-Andrew (long story.) Hector was one of beloved four-legged friends. While there were several woodworkers over several generations in the family tree, my father undoubtedly had the greastest influence on me in this regard. Also, I worked several years as an estimater for a lumber company that had an architectural mill. I mingled have in woodworking for close to 30 of my 48 years but have been increasingly more serious about it over the last 5 or so years. I had been lurking in power tools, but started here about a year ago when I started turning. I have been stuck on turning clocks!

Name is Monty an ancient 48 years old. I've been a brick contractor for the last 25 years. About a year ago after welding some tools up for the job I decided that I really liked making stuff so I decided to start doing woodwork, rushed out to the nearest Sears with credit card in hand and bought a POS table saw and a POS sliding miter saw(wish I woulda put all the money on a better table saw knowing what I know now ). Haven't made the plunge into buying a lathe yet but after seeing some of the pieces on here it has inspired me to try it as soon as winter is over.
Love the forum BTW, I have to say that it is probably the most civil forum I have ever been on that had this many members!

Hello, my name is Ross. I have had a lathe for several years, made stuff, even sold some, but never felt that I really understood what I was doing with the lathe. I retired from my day job in January (40 years with the Govt.), and down to only my evening/weekend job (teaching at the local Community College). Now that I have more time, my objective is to learn the correct way to turn! Last weekend I indulged myself with a retirement present: Jet 1642 (since Woodcrafter's had them on sale). I'm planning to join the local Woodturner's club soon, since thats what everyon says is the best thing to do. I have been lurking on this forum for years, but only just recently joined. Thank you all for all the help that you have given to others, through the years, who requested it - because it also helped me. Thanks, again.

My name is Josh and I have been WWing for about 5 yrs and am fairly inexperienced in turning. I got my lathe at an auction for $55 along with a set of Craftsman chisels about 2 yrs. ago. It is a 50's model Delta that I have since slightly restored. I have made a few rolling pins, pens, and other small projects. My tools have been in storage for about 8 months now while I wait for the new house and shop to get built(spring). I am a 34 yr. old stay at home dad with a daughter in kindergarten and 2 boys ages 4 and 3. My wife is a college nursing instructor and also does nurse education at a hospital in Madison 2 days a week. I also get free classes at the college where she teaches so I decided to take advantage of that last semester when I started taking some CAD classes. I hope to, eventually, get into home design when the kids are all in school. Most of my experience is home improvement related but because of this forum and help from a couple of friends who are WWers I have grown my skills, tool collection, and appreciation for this wonderful hobby. I hope to improve and challenge myself with each new project and it is much easier with help available here. Thank you.

I'm Tony, 51 yrs old. Accountant at a country club by day, avoider of woodshop (due to lack of motivation) by night.
My first "lathe" was a Dremel 30 or so years ago. Worked up to a 2-tube Sears, which saw me through 20 years of ignoring wood altogether. Then in 2001 after my father died, I replaced the Sears with a Delta 46-700, which was replaced in 2004 by a Jet 1442, which in turn was just replaced this month by a Jet 1642.
Wonder how many more lathes before I shuffle off this ol' globe....

I just realized I didn't post anything to this thread. My name is John. I am 32, married for 10 years, father to three children (ages 5, 2, and 1), and employed as a technical writer.
My wife is one of those people who can make just about anything she sees, and she actually got me started making stuff. I've tinkered around with woodworking for a few years now, but I think I've finally landed now that I've started woodturning. I love it and hope to develop as a turner each time I spin something.
I try to spend most of my free time turning, but I have been an avid reader since my early teens. I already sacrificed hunting in '07 for lathe-time, but I won't be sacrificing reading.
Anyway, thanks for letting me participate in this community.

OK. I've been lurking here on Woodnet and the Woodturing group for a while, posting only when I think I can add something to the body of knowledge or answer a specific question. So, I guess I'll introduce myself. My name is Emil and I'm an addicted woodturner in Jacksonville, FL.
I'm going to be 60 this year, but still consider myself a novice woodturner. Getting time in the shop is my biggest obstacle. So many demands, so little free time.... That is the appeal of woodturning: I can walk into the shop after dinner, chuck up a blank and have a completed bowl before I go to bed. I've turned about a dozen small bowls/open vessels and have most of them lined up on the mantle so I can regularly look at them and monitor my progress at woodturning proficiency.
My goal is to get to segmented turning. I've built a press and collected some wood, made a lot of sketches and diagrams, but have yet to cut the first mitered segment. I have a mentor who is way out there in skill and technique which is a big help ..... sometimes.
I've been getting into turning in fits and starts. I bought a small Nova Mercury a few years ago and felt it was underpowered so I sold it. Then I refrubbed an old Walker Turner lathe (I like old iron, but it's going to my nephew's "lathe-less" shop, soon). I picked up a used Jet mini with a Nova chuck, a bunch of arbors several months ago when I went to buy a Dewalt scrollsaw from a fellow, but the mini has its limitations. Then, in January, after wrestling with my WT lathe and belt changing for a whole afternoon, I bought a Jet 1642EVS-2. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! WHAT A LATHE!
This is a great forum. I've been visiting various online discusssions since about 1990 and the days of usenet usegroups, if anyone remembers those. I agree that this is a very civil place to hang out and I appreciate that the technical discussions don't drag on forever. (I've always liked the motto "Lurk a Lot but Post Little"). The body of knowledge and willingness to share it here makes woodturning all that much more enjoyable for me!
Thnx for reading this.
/Emil

Name's Bill When Mom Used all three names (William Griffith Bagnall) I ducked. bought a crapsman twin tube back in 83. that lathe shook so bad and so crappy I only turned when there was no other solution. bought a griz 1495 eight years ago. Now I just have to figgger out how to sharpen the the tools, use the skew, and how to find time energy to turn when I get home from my const. job. A few extra bucks for the toys wouldn't hurt either.

Been turning for ..well, ok .. I'll be turning in about an hour. No really ... got a gift cert from my daughters to a Woodcraft turning class .. one of those intro .. pen making classes. Enjoyed it and carry that pen still. Now .. I'm not going to say that LOML had something to do with it ... ever since she went with me to a Rockler and saw a ..what .. a bubinga nut? .. big thing looks like an eggplant.. ya it was turned and looked great .. she said "you should do that" .. I said well I do some woodworking dear .. but I don't turn .. thats different ... next I know I get the gift from the daughters and as a follow up a pen turning lathe + gear for birthday gifts .. so I took the hint and am really looking forward to it ....

I'm Mark, Marko to many. Not into turning yet - I'll read and learn, then turn. Mighty soon. Maybe get some gear over weekend.
Made to many lousy boxes in my life - time to do so creative things. Late 50's and ain't liking that fact either.

I'm Robert Allen. I'll answer to "Dinner's ready!"
I just started wood turning about a month ago. Got a set of tools and a Delta Midi-lathe. Not a bad little machine.
Started out on scrap pieces of lumber and the like, then started cutting down dead trees around the property and using them. Now I'm getting into exotic woods and have turned out a few things I'll be putting photos up actually later today. So keep an eye out

Guess I should pony up since I have a "lathe" now (yes, I use the term loosely- it's less than awesome).
My name's Brandon Beakes. I'm 24, have a wife and by December will have 2 little ones. I have only just begun tinkering with turning but will be slowly collecting tools and knowledge and am very excited for what the future has to offer.
The thing that 'turned' me on to turning was probably, unfortunately, dealing with sub-par tools and methods for regular woodwork. The struggle for straight, level, parallel, blah blah blah blah blah... oh wait, what's this? Round? Smooth? Shiny? Warping and re-doing accepted and expected? A whole new set of standards to fall below? I'm in!
I'm a perfectionist by nature but mostly an "instant results" man in practice. It makes for very unusual conversations with myself in the basement in the middle of the night

Haha. No twins on the way. I'm generally too long-winded, so I thought it would be faster than saying "I have a 16-month-old boy named William and another little one due December 6th."

My given name is Ron.
After Dad died, I moved back home to help Mom out and finally got something resembling a shop. In addition to woodwork I attempt blacksmithing.
I started a website if you're interested http://www.geocities.com/son_of_bluegrass/
The lathe I have is direct drive and old enough to have oil ports. Yes oil ports not grease fittings. So far my turnings have been replacement sword handles. I belong to a fencing club and we have a standing tuesday night sword fight.

I'm Joel. I'm a turning noob, but enjoy it so far. I had done some limited turning in high school shop (showing my age) and with the advice here, that's how I've gotten back into it.
I've made quite a few pens, some yo-yos, tops, one salt and pepper set, and a few "bowls" so far. I have an old ShopSmith that I use for turning, and it's served my purposes so far.

My name is mike , I live in walla walla washington and have been turning wood and metals for 15 years. Most of my larger wood turnings have been to make foundry patterns for making iron castings. (manhole rings and covers)
I have a smithy midas 1220 metal lathe that I use to turn wood and metals.
Im a manual machinist by trade and most of the work I have done is making parts for farm machines.
This is my home shop. Since this picture was taken I hav bought a table saw, band saw, scroll saw, a huge dual head drill press and lots of saw blades.

May as well join the club. My name is Danelo, I am 65 and a retired educator. I have always enjoyed wood working, but have learned what little I know from books- I love to read.About 20 years back I bought a lathe ,made in Taiwan, for less than $100 and enjoyed turning untill the motor died. To make a long story short, I layed off woodworking for 10 years. For the past three weeks I have been cleaning and fixing my shop and having a great time. I should be turning as soon as my new lathe arrives. On a separate note: The response to my questions and information provided by all of you is the best reward of all. It is great to know that there is a group of people who are willing to share unselfishly what they know with complete strangers is phenomenal . You are a very special group of people.

JD...Up till now I have been building Rustic and outdoor items as a hobby and craft shows for the last few years. I then found turning as a means to offer something for repeat customers. I am new to turning and have been turning Pens for about two months now. I am ready to take the step up to bowls. Real life job is very high pace and stressful..Hint.. I am the guys that looks for your stolen tools and tracks down the bad guy so I look forward to the weekend to unwind in the shop..

Hmm, guess I havent done this. I'm Jason, as my name denotes. Call me Woody or Jason. Fitting nickname for a woodworker isn't it? Been woodworking off and on since 7th grade shop class, mostly off, but on the last few years. Now I can afford my own stuff. Turned a couple of things in that same shop class, and just really started turning again about a month ago. Mainly interested in pens.

My name is Bill Hall and I've been turning for about a week now. I live in the Philadelphia suburbs just outside King of Prussia. I'm using a PSI Turncrafter Pro and Crown HSS tools to get started. I've been doing light woodworking for over a year now and I wanted something to do when I couldn't use my loud power tools. I live in a townhouse community and I don't want to tick off the neighbors.
This is my first turning:

Welcome, Bill. I like your first turning. We'd love to see more pics of your turnings as you continue to learn and get sucked deeper and deeper into the addiction that is woodturning.

My name is Karl. I was introduced to turning in high school and liked it. When I was in my 20s I had a micro lathe--I believe it was made by Dremel--tiny little thing, but I had some fun with it. Then I had a very long hiatus from turning, but just recently picked up a second hand Jet Mini Lathe (it's the one from a few years ago which relies on belts for speed changes). I do dabble in other forms of wood working, so I can't see myself becoming a turning master, but I would like to learn enough so I can use the lathe as another tool in my arsenal.

Hi Everyone, Just joined so I thought I would say Howdy. Real name is David but everyone calls me Doc. I'm not currently turning although I did when I was quite a bit younger. I will be returning to it as soon as I get back to the States. I'm in Korea at the moment. My wife has been asking me for years to make her some spools for her spinning wheel but I never had the time. Well I've decided to make the time. I'm really more of a Lurker at heart but I will come out of my cave to answer most any question that I can. I look forward to learning a lot.
Cheers Doc.

Hi, I'm Bill Esposito. I've been turning for about 4 years I think. Life and work has kept me from any serious turning/woodworking for about a year but I hope to change all that this winter. I have some cherry burls and an unopened box of McNaughton center savers just waiting to be used.

Alec Hosterman here. I've been doing WW for about a year now, working on basic pieces - boxes, cutting boards, trivets, recipe holders, etc. Made an apothecary chest last Xmas (it was okay) and am now working on a music stand for my lovely wife.
I just turned my first pen the other day and am really drawn in by the creative nature of turning. It's definitely not simple, but I can see how the skills one has to have in turning will help me in other WW aspects.
I'm also into photography: www.alechosterman.com and have a blog on all things that come across my mind: www.alechosterman.com/WordPress

I'm Robert. Been hooked on tools all my life. I started to build when I was 4 and that was 46 years ago. I have never been away from building something for more then a few months. When I was in Jr. High I got into turning wood and when in high School I was into turning metal. Then that was the last I had done anything on a lathe. Until about a month ago when I picked up an old Delta. One older then I am.

My initials are tlc (hence the username). My first name is Tom. I just turned 70 and have been dabbling in wood since I was 10 or so. My dad was a real handyman and introduced me to various and sundry interests involved with 'doing stuff'. My turning interest was rekindled when I purchased a PM45 several months ago. I also have a shop full of old equipment I have been collecting for 60 years or so and am adding a couple of drill presses next week. The quest never stops. I mostly just lurk and look, but tend to get looooong winded when I do have something to post. tlc... Remember: Keep your personal parts away from the moving parts.

hello, my name is steve. I'm 52, retired last year from Ky State Govt. (Env. Biologist). I have also been preaching for about 25 yrs. Been doing hobby flatwork for about 15 yrs., but often little done for months at a time, have a list of bookcases, shelves, furniture etc. from the kids which I'll never finish. I also subsitute teach in local school system which cuts into my hours a lot. Just ordered a jet mini to start turning. Motivated in a large part by the great pens and bowls seen here. I've yet to turn a lathe on. But will learn if I have the time. Currently trying to find someone in Bowling Green / Owensboro area to teach me the first hour introductory lesson. No clubs here, I'm in the boondocks.

I'm Peter Brown, 31. Kludge is more than my handle, it's my way of life.
I just started turning in November, and while I love my time at the lathe I find that I cannot do anything right the first time. I must try and fail numerous times before I succeed. It's more rewarding for me when I do. If anything went smooth right off the bat, I think I'd drop over dead.
No one I know does any WWing. If it weren't for WN, I'd be lost.

OK, I'll chime in, only because I've enjoyed this post so much....
Turned my first project in high school, 'bout 35 years ago. Never turned again as I didn't have access to a lathe. Started to gather flat work tools about 10 years ago when kids grew up enough I could afford something for myself again. Then I bought a used jet from a guy at work and turned a couple bad sample bowls. It sat in the corner for 5 years or so collecting dust. I then started reading the turning forum seeing pictures thinking "wow, those are amazing!!!", I think I'll try that. It was way tooooooooo late before I heard the sucking sound!!!
Last year I upgraded to mustard, and that doesn't include new sorbys, crowns, dust collection, chucks, sharpening, sanding, I know, I know, you all know the story...
I typically turn bowls. Some lidded, most not, out of green blanks. One of my favorite woods is Spalted Hackberry, love that stuff. Turned one winged bowl out of zebrawood which I named the " Bloody Knuckle Bowl" for obvious reasons.
No outlet for them, most are gifts other than the ones LOML claims for her own. Probably turned 50 or so now, and still TONS to learn and enjoy. With that said, time to go stoke the fire, it was 22 degrees in the shop when I got home tonight and I want to play....
Take care and happy turning!!!
-------------------- Tom k honey, heading out to the shop now, love you...

Jason, 36 - I have been turning for about 1.25 yrs total.
Though I have a couple RL friends that turned me onto the forums about a year ago, this is my first post.
In the past year I have gotten MANY useful tips and info here. I love the forum, guys and gals.
I am hoping to share a few pics of projects in the next day or two.
Thanks for the great work and fantastic help. It's good to see a place like this for people to discuss a truly addictive hobby.
P.S. As for the post a couple before me, Gratz! I have my first child due...well, was due Monday 12/15. We are still waiting, somewhat patiently

My name is Phil Land. I am a 47 year old and married. I have a 26 year old daughter who is married and 2 1/2 years ago gave me my first granddaughter. Then 3 1/2 years ago my present wife and I adopted our son, Matt (he was less than two when he was helping me sand that pen on the lathe in the picture that is my avatar) he loves the "chop" and the saw dust in the shop. I have been turning since I got my HF like lathe 4 1/2 years ago (edit: that lathe lasted about 6 months then I got my Jet 1236)

I'm one of the new guys. My name is David and I haven't really done any turning yet. I'm getting together a set of tools to give it a try. It has always intrigued me so I'm sure I keep doing it even if it doesn't become my obsession. One thing that interests me about it is it is not all that loud of a thing to do. I do woodworking stuff outside and often late at night so I have to be cautious about what I do.

True, and you are right about being quiet. That is what I love most about it. I get up early on the weekends. I'm up at 3:20 M-F for work, so 5 on a weekend is sleeping in. I can get up, and go into the basement and turn to my hearts desire and not bother the wife while I'm at it. See if I can run my tablesaw, bandsaw, CMS, router, or any other tool at that time in the morning. I bet I'd get a big

My name is Edgar, I’m a retired educator and I’ll be 77 in June. I picked dryheat because it is often mentioned when learning that I live in the Arizona Desert “yes but it’s a dry heat”. Anything over 105 is HOT no matter how dry it is. I bought a lathe several years ago because it was on sale and I always wanted to do some turning. I’m just getting started now and hope to make a few bowls and boxes. Most of my woodworking has been in cabinetry and Windsor Chairs. Edgar
