Rather enterprising. I'll be interested in the results.

We (the lovely Mrs Snipe Hunter) have this real nice treadmill collecting dust with digital fpm readout. The motor is plenty strong enough. I have an old westinghouse garage door opener motor with a step down transmission. I'll use it for the feed. The treadmill has a power height grade doohicky that I'll use for the drum height adjustment. The bearings are big and sealed. I'll need to find either another drum to wrap around the extra long tread or a shorter tread.
Any idea where I could find a short tread? What rpm does a drum spin on a (real) drum sander?

How wide is this treadmill?

My dad made a sander from the rollers on a old ringer washer. I remember him using it when I was young (a long time ago), but I don't know how well it worked, I think he just glued sand paper to one of the rollers. Good luck with yours.

I am in the planning stages of doing the same thing myself. I have the drum, gearing and the motor. Now i need a design. I am considering v-drum or a more conventional drum on top style. Let me know how it goes.

Maybe you would like one of these. http://www.stockroomsupply.com/V_Drum_Sander.php I saw a demonstration at the Denver woodworking show a few weeks ago. I was impressed at what it could do. If I had the money I would have bought one on the spot.
