Hello all,
Did a search with zero results. We put an offer on a 1954 ranch style home. It sits on a 3 block street that looks like it never left the 1950's except for the cars. Almost all of the other homes look really cool. The yards are manicured and all is good with the world. But when you get to ours? Hmm? The husband left, junk has built up, more moss in the lawn than grass and the curb appeal does not match the rest of the neighborhood like it once did.
The house is in really good condition, real oak hardwood floors, fireplace, coved ceilings with a tray recess that I have not seen before, original or replica linoleum floors and kitchen caounter tops, natural gas wh, furnace w/ AC, fully fenced etc.
Its small and the 1/2 ac. lot has plenty of room to make larger garage, a shop and add a great rooom and master suite.
The problem is, I think I would prefer to keep it in the same design feel of the hood if I can. I just cant find any images of a Ranch style remodel, especially with an upstairs, other than a daylight basement. All the entry photos I can find are just plain and I would like to dress it up. Most of the rest of the homes have cool brick. This one has minimal plain boring brick. That I can change.
I have been searching Google images and can find all kinds of pictures of thngs I would like to make the house look like, but it would not keep the same look/feel of the hood. How evil would it be to change the style now? And as the older folks that own them now move on, will others change their style and I kept the old look for nothing?
Looking for opinions on change and also ideas for giving it more curb appeal and adding the above features.
Thanks, Chris

Thanks for that picture Jack! That could fit in just like it was always there I think. Part of our issue is to keep it a ranch t fit in the neighborhood. But this could solve both sides maybe.

There is one next door that is leaning towards the atomic house, just not the full blown version. Not sure they had progressed that far in 53 when these were built? Some are very cool though.

When I want to look at lots of images, I type a term like "atomic ranch" into google images , then open with cooliris from my firefox browser . If you have a high speed conection , you can look at hundreds of images per minute. Its one of myfavorite design motivators . Another fun one is "steampunk"

I need to try it without remodel at the end. I was trying to see whole house fronts and not single items. But I may get more ideas from backgrounds in the pictures like the door..
