Anybody have an opinion ( ) on using Ash for a work bench? It seems like it would be tough enough.

Seems like a good choice; in fact, I was planning on using it for a bench base, with a manufactured maple top.

Yes, everybody has an opinion. Everybody has something else too, which your smiley sort of reminds me of (hint, they both usually stink).
IMHO ash would make an excellent workbench.

Me included . Just to be clear however, I only meant that there is never a shortage of opinions here (and lots of really good advice ).

It's a very good choice but here's a thought. If you want a Maple top you could laminate a 1/2" Maple surface onto an Ash substrate as long as the grain runs the same way. That will give you the smoother whiter surface for drawing on.

I am 1 week into building an ash bench. Works great, looks great. Solid.
Originally planned for an "inexpensive" quality construction lumber style bench -- and quickly found that in New England ash is competitive with Doug Fir, SYP (hard to find) and other quality softwood alternatives.

Ash would definitely be "tough enough"!
For lots of details on building an ash bench, check out Jameel Abraham's blog - here's the series on workbenches. Jameel is the maker of the drool-inducing Benchcrafted vises, and he did a great job describing (and photographing and even videotaping) his bench build. Highly recommended! And back to the specific topic at hand, IIRC he mentioned something in one of his blog articles that he would have preferred to use maple if it were cheaper... Maybe he'll chip in here to clarify that!
