I have one of the field test models, and while it has been beaten to death on the brake - marketing issues, I will say the same things as many others, although I bought it for the brake, even without it is a pretty nice saw. I haven't seen the PM or new Unisaw in any detail, so I can't provide that comparison, but the SS professional cab saw is pretty nice to use. It has a gas cartridge that provides some additional lift when raising and lowering the blade - so that works very smoothly easily, it has a zero clearance insert that locks in place and removes without any tools or screws - though as a downside , if you want to make you own zci - you would have to use a screw to hold it in place, the changeover from blade guard to splitter is tool free and pretty easy since both can be stored on the side of the saw. The miter gauge is pretty average, though it can be stored on the side also, the fence is quite good - but there is no onboard storage. The saw has plenty of power, and you can adjust nearly anything you can think of in a very precise manner ( you don't need a hammer ) . I don't use a dado blade so I can't speak to that, but I change between a WWII and the Sawstop blade in a minute or two with no adjustments of the brake mechanism. Overall I am quite pleased.

I went to Woodcraft ready to order one and found out they only sell the saw with the fence. I have a Jointech fence that I was going to use and combine the saw and router table to save room. Now I am forced to buy a fence that I will not use (I think it is a great fence but wanted to use something else that I already owned).
Now I am rethinking the purchase. I can almost buy the industrial version without a fence for the same price.

I agree, you would be better off paying the difference and getting the Industrial version. I own the Professional model and I love the saw but would never claim it to be in the same league as the Industrial model.

That's fair. I guess the next question is: is the Professional version still "Professional" or is it "lite"? what does one have, that the other doesnt? table size, motor options, what else?

As I understand, The professional has 3 HP motor (no option for 5HP), and has the 27" deep table and the Industrial has a 30 or 32" table. They are both left tilt, however they moved the 'hump' to the other side of the cabinet so the trunnion must be different in the professional but that is a pure guess.

Maverick, you hit the differences between the two. Larger table size, more motor options are the biggest differences along with larger trunnions. The fence and rails that are made for the Industrial saw are also heftier.

Maverick, my suggestion to pay the difference and buy the industrial model was intended for trackersoft since in his position he already owns a fence that he wants to use.

For me, I use the Professional model for hobby use but it would be suitable for much heavier use. I wanted a lower cost saw than the Industrial version and have no regrets whatsoever buying it. I would be in line again to order another one if anything happened to the one that I got through the field tester program.

If you choose the Professional saw, take a look at purchasing the mobile base from the Industrial saw. The Industrial Mobile base is primo and will fit the Professional saw with a conversion kit that will be included.

Apoligies for typos and SP errors... I typed this out really quick at work.

The local woodcraft has a display model of the proffesional in stock now. I have the industrial at home.

They happened to have the proffessional sitting right next to the PM2000 table saw. I took a few min to compare the saws out of curiosity. The Proffesional looked to be very simmilar as far as the trunion "massivness" and the general heavy dutyness of the saw. The Proffessional will only be avaliable with a 3hp motor. The powermatic has a little bigger table I think so that was the only advantage I could find for the powermatic. The trunion setup is different from the industrial. Didnt figiure out all the details as I was sticking my head in the door on the floor in the store. The price difference between the saws was only $200, I can see that is going to hurt Powermatic.

In sumarry both the PM2000 and the proffesional seem about on the same level.

Neither saw is as heavy as the Industrial saw. The elevation wheel on the Industrial is about 2x as big as either the proffesional or the powermatic.

I also bought one of the field test models and so far, with limited use am quite pleased with it. It replaced a Unisaw - bought it primarily for the safety feature as I'm getting a little older and wanted to take the possibility of a serious accident out of the tablesaw equation.

For my purposes, it will do all I will ever need; use it for home improvement and general shop projects. It is a well built saw, easy to use, nice ergonomics and I sprang for the Industrial Saw mobile base, which really helps when moving the saw around. It's hydraulic and the casters swivel in all directions which I've found is a real advantage.

Under the field test program the saw was $2,500 for the 36" model with free shipping, quite reasonable considering that other competitive "new generation" cabinet saws without the safety feature are near this price.

HTH,

Doug
