K.L. This Bud's for you:

March 8: The ReStore featured on "Saving with 6ABC"

"The Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in Chalfont is a do-it-yourselfer's dream-come-true. The warehouse-sized thrift store is filled with hardware, building supplies, furniture, appliances and all sorts of knick-knacks," Says Amy Buckman of Channel 6.

Here's the video link (story 1 of 3):

http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/consumer/save_with_6abc&id=6643350

I haven't visited Re-Store when it's open, grew up near the old packaging plant.

Mom did, she was impressed. Lots of new contractor donated stuff.

She also said they had a "free" wood bin. You can donate or salvage the stuff, no cost. Great idea, probably just construction S-P-F stuff but not a bad idea for woodworkers shorts, etc either.

The link for the website is: habitatbucks.org

I've been in on 5 'builds'.
The beneficiaries have been great! They work hard to help and are most appreciative.
One little 10 year old girl was sweeping a bedroom... trash everywhere and no roof yet.... Sez me, "Why are you sweeping?" "This is MY bedroom and I want it clean!"
If you can hand the key to the front door to the recipients and see the look of love in their eyes and not get a lump in your throat, then you are tougher than me.

I've helped on 3 builds myself. In my experience although you are doing something to help others, the "help" it gives you far outweighs the help you give to others. It does a body good to do something for someone else and the social networking in meeting others just like you with shared interests is a bonus.

Be a foreman (I served as drywall foreman one weekend) and teach others. It's different when your students want to learn rather than the kids I work with at my regular job who act like they couldn't care less.

I'm rambling.

Habitat for Humanity is a good experience for everyone. I highly encourage it if you have the time...and if you don't, make time.

I've been a Habitat volunteer for several years - both locally and overseas - and it is a fantastic organization. I'm actually raising money for them right now by bicycling 500 miles in August. If you're interested in this fundraiser, you can read more about it and even make a donation here: Pedaling for Humanity

I donate supplies and buy some stuff from the restore in Louisville. It is a busy place and you never know what will show up. Working on a Habitat house is on my to do list.

I am on the local HfH board and the construction committee. I am a home builder and am giving my expertise to get our houses built better and more energy efficient. In the past, our local HfH has always tried to build the cheapest crap they can. I did a presentation when I got on the board about "green" building and we voted to build our next home that we are just about to start to the highest energy efficiency possible.

Man, given the kinds of houses I have seen that you have built, I cannot imagine how nice those HfH houses you are getting developed look.

I've been involved with my local chapter for the past 10 years (off and on). I first volunteered by providing free house designs for 6 of their houses and was involved in 4 builds and just recently finished 2 builds back to back. Everyone is very appreciative and the new homeowners are very grateful.

I was directly involved with 2 families when I was designing the houses and the comments, appreciation, laughs and tears of joy were worth every moment. They were especially touched when I told them I was designing a THEIR OWN custom house.

I enjoy it greatly. Got started locally a few years back and when I got married, my buddies set-up a trip to New Orleans as my "bachelor party." The five of us worked in the ninth ward and Musician's Village, 2 years post Katrina. We now go back twice a year just to work with one of the local supervisors (Peter). I've found the people (HfH and homeowners) to be great!

Steve
