Just went to my stash of QSWO in order to plan the top of a 60X40 dining table. To my dismay, most of the boards with great figure have a knot right in the middle (about 40-50" from each end). They are bookmatched. I planned on running the boards "long-ways," but now am rethinking.
Question #1, what are your thoughts about running the boards short-ways.
Question #2, what are your perceived disadvantages, i.e. looks, movement, etc.
Question #3, anyone have any pictures?
Question #4, debating harvest style vs 4 legs, any thoughts?
Thanks!!

Hi doctor, why not run the boards in the 40" direction? I made this "den table" like that:

I don't know what style that you are trying to achieve, but you could always use those bowtie shaped plugs to put over the knots. Just an Idea.

I think running the boards across (i.e. "short-ways") is fine. Its the normal practice on tables with extension leaves. Either way works fine. The look is a little different but I'm can't see that one way looks better than the other.
Here is a picture (48" round table + two 12" leaves):

depends on the style on running the boards shortways or not. a harvest table like you say is a possiblity imo would not look good the shortway. if the knots are solid why not just make them a design feature? again this may depend on the table style. of like someone said use bowtie inlays. harvest vs. 4 legged if you normally set folks at the end of the table go with a four legged or pedestal style. the end of a most harvest tables make for a tight fit for the person on the end. once a yr no problem everyday is a drag.
