I have a Freud 8 inch dado set and have issues when using shims. It seems that whenever I stack the set with shims, the shims nest themselves into the threads of the arbor making it impossible to get a tight stack. When I tighten the stack the shims just get mashed into the threads.
Has anyone else had this problem?

This is a common problem with stacked dado sets. The solution is to get a set of magnetic shims which stick to the cutters and stay centered on the arbor hole. Forrest and Highland Woodworking carry them; as I'm sure, do other vendors.

Yes, I have this problem all the time. I know the answer, too. I'm just too lazy to get what I really need.

have the same set and had the same problem until I tried using a touch of grease(I do mean a touch) to hold the shim until I tighten the nut. So far Its worked for me

Same set same problem. I have put the Frued shims away and just use the magnetic stick-ons that came with a Forest set I have. Perfect.

It is easy to transfer magnetism. I would think that if I just rubbed the existing shims with a magnet a few times they would be magnetic enough to stick. I will try it. Shop is 9* today, so likely not today.
