He has a very nice Web Site and his cabinet goes without saying. But just a little rich for my blood, although with the work involved and the materials I am sure it is worth every penny.

Admiral. I am glad you re-opened it. I studied Jeff's photographs, went to FWW and downloaded Chris Becksvoort's article and have read every entry. Thank you all.

Bringing this one back lest we forget what real tool storage should look like.

I've seen it twice in person and it is breathtakingly crisp.

Thanks for the reminder. I'm building a tool cabinet now and this really helps!

It's funny you bumped this up over the weekend. I was at Lie Nielsen over the weekend for the Roy Underhill joinery class and this cabinet was up the classroom. It is very beautiful in person. I'm still debating building a tool chest (anarchistic or not) or a wall cabinet. I was leaning towards the chest, but seeing this cabinet may have slanted me in favor of the wall hanger.

With all due respect to the fine workmanship I see here in the tool "chests", when I see heirloom tools rattling around next to and atop one another, I cringe. The tool cabinet that is pictured above is no harder to build than chest; it just takes some planning of the layout and some patient execution of the fixturing for each tool or group of tools. When finished, each tool is readily at hand and you have utilized wall space instead of precious square footage of floor space. Plus, if you have ever had a flooded basement.....well, you know what I mean.

It's interesting that you bring up the chest vs. wall case debate. I've had to push back my plans for building a more permanent handtool storage solution because my wife complained that I was only ever building things for the shop. At the time, I'd fully intended on building something like Chris B's chest featured here, though probably a bit bigger, but with just as much thought put into how to lay things out so little room would be wasted. When the Schwarz came out with his chest movement, I was solidly among the initial skeptics. However, I find myself edging closer to to the fence as I ponder the sheer volume of tools that I need to store. Ultimately, it seems like I could fit more in the chest than in a hanging cabinet. Conversely, the storage in a well-laid out cabinet would be much more efficient than in a chest that relies on some sliding tills and maybe a chisel, molding plan, and saw rack for organization.

Part of me wonders if maybe the reason I'm drawn to the chest isn't so much that I want to make it my tool storage choice as much as I just want to build one. Perhaps I could just build one, paint it pink and white, and give it to my daughter and let it be a toy chest or something

You can fit a lot of tools in a wall hanger....

Since this pic was taken, there are even more tools mounted above the bench planes, and all the cubby holes are now full. Still have a lot of stuff like auger bits, files and rasps, vintage chisels and a lot of marking/measuring tools in the Craftsman chest of drawers I keep underneath.
