Every once in a while, someone will post a thread along the lines of 'where did [insert really talented craftsman's name here] go? Why don't they post here anymore?'. Next time you see one of them, think of this thread.
This is so true. I haven't been on here that long and I have seen it happen already.
I applaud woodworkers getting paid well for their work. Nice work Mr. Becksvoort. I hope you had as much fun making it as I have making my humble projects.

And that cabinet was significantly larger with an additional door.

So let's assume that it took Becksvoort half the time to build the LN tool cabinet.
65 hours @ $50/hr labor rate = $3,250, which puts the final selling price of the cabinet easily into the $5,000-7,000 range based on labor alone.
Add in the limited edition factor, and $10,000 starts to look like a not so unreasonable price to put on this cabinet.
I'm trying to be conservative with these estimates. Even with the one door less, I think it would take Becksvoort more than half the time to build this cabinet compared to his previous one in FWW. And I would guess that $50/hr is conservative for a woodworker of Becksvoort's caliber. Last time I took my car to the shop, I was charged a $75/hr labor rate. And we haven't even considered material costs.
But the thing is, none of this matters. There is a strong argument that pricing based on a hourly rate * time to make project + materials + profit margin formula is one way to make sure your piece will sell at a price below what it should. The best way to price this tool cabinet is not based on how much time it took to build the thing. The best way to price this tool cabinet is to set a price comparable to other large limited edition furniture items by a known maker. And judging from what Thomas Moser priced their limited edition clock for, the price of the Becksvoort LN tool cabinet, again, seems reasonable.

Have one of these sold at the asking price? It doesn't take but one buyer for a one-off piece of course. Just curious.

Hi Charles
According to Jeff (in his opening post - thanks for all the amazing pics, Jeff), three cabinets were made and one has sold (no, 'twas not I).

There is a recent video interview with Chris Becksvoort where he discusses his shop hourly rate, and the reality of running a one man furniture business. The one hour+ video is worth watching, even if you just see the first 10 minutes. It was a live interview with 5 of the FWW contributing editors: Gary Rogowski, Garrett Hack, Roland Johnson, Steve Latta, and Christian Becksvoort. It is currently free to watch without a registered account.
I'm more than a bit disappointed at how this thread quickly dissolved into petty criticisms. I would ask that you please not restart the debate.

I agree that debate is heathly but would also caution that while this is a free country it isn't always polite to speak EXACTLY what is on your mind. A bit of moderation is often required.
I would appreciate it if we just allow Jeff to post these wonderful photos without totally going off the deep end with discussions about how much this and how little that.

No Joe, you don't seem to undestand at all. The truth does not always win out on forums. What really happens is that people get sick of the mud slinging and walk away. There is a big difference between healthy debate and a battle of attrition. These forum exist to allow people to share information. When the people with information worth sharing regard participation as a lost cause, then the forum is no longer worth reading.
