Been staring at a 3 inch thick slab of crotch walnut in my shop for almost a year. It had a live edge on a couple corners. I resawed it, and made this. The interior is boxed in so the openings do not access the inside of the box. No fancy joinery, just wanted the wood to stand out.

So I see you resolved the base issue since I was over there. Fantastic! (And for the rest of you, the wood is actually more awesome than the pics show.) Great job....can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Beautiful use of an extraordinary slab. The grain match of the sapwood edges around the corners is awesome. All of this set off and "lifted" by a wonderfully designed base.
This is great work!
Can you explain this statement further?

Thanks for all the kind replies. Not sure where the inspiration came from. Wife said it was my shop beer fridge..... The "Holes" are partitioned off with 3/8" walnut boards inside. Can't really be seen outside, but when I finish the inside of the box I'll post some pics. The base is not attached yet, as I wasn't sure if I really liked it, but I think it will do.

IMO, the base helps "make" the whole chest, makes it almost look like it's floating. Can't imagine any other base that would work so well with it. Can't wait to see the pic of the interior.

It works wonderfully. You got the wood to stand out, and you made anyone looking at it see how wonderful the "defects" are by highlighting and echoing them in the base.
The conflict between a chest to keep blankets clean and safe, and the beautiful gaping holes in the corners, makes the viewer think. Are you planning to finish the inside with something like shellac, so as to show off the grain without smells that last?
Any time you get someone to see things in a new, unexpected, and valuable way, I think you can make a good case that it's art.

LIL. Saw the first photo and thought "Okay, that's a pretty top."
Looked at the second and third pics and went "WOW!!!!! Stunning piece from the middle down!!" Those open corners and zig-zag base, wonderfully joined by the bullnose "shelf", just knock me out. IMHO that's an 12 on a 1-to-10 scale.
Your choice of wood, how you handle it as you are incorporating it into the design (by letting it be the design), the way you make a substantial chest look so light, the craftsmanship and execution --- everything is to like on this piece.
Thank you for sharing it with us.

Yes, inside of box is going to be finished with shellac. Might lay some aromatic Cedar in bottom also.
Because of all of you, I now must use the roll-up door to my shop instead of the regular door. My head will only fit the big door. Thank you all.

Normally I'm not one to "pile on" a thread and say the same things everyone else has. But if ever there was one to deserve it, you made it. Nice/WOW/incredible/gorgeous, no word or words comes close to expressing the admiration (and jealousy) I have for your level of craft on display here. So I can only say "Thank you" for sharing it with me/us.

Sis and BIL have a small company since they retired, they putter around with it, it`s a financial loser as far as most people look at a biz, but they are happy to help. They only keep what they spend to make the product, and send it out to others, unless you buy/donate for $50.00 worth, then they even eat S&H. The remainder goes to several Wounded Vet programs, of which WW is their biggest recipient. They got the idea from my Mom after they took over her financial dealings, and found she had been donating a few K every year to several veteran programs. LOML and I help them do shows when they travel, it`s a major warm and fuzzy when you see vets cry tears of gratitude for what you are doing to honor them, and their Brothers/Sisters for their service. Again, a big thumbs up for your actions.

oh picky picky picky ;-)
At first it looked to me like the end grain was facing to the sides. Then I noticed that they face the front - a little hard to distinguish in these pictures. It seems to me that the flow of the grain pattern works best the way it is. IMHO the live edge speaks loudly (and beautifully at that) and would not have benefited visually from other form of joinery.

Thats a fair question. I looked at both sides and decided the grain best matched with end grain facing front. Also, if I were to have end grain facing side, live edge height would not have matched up as well. Pretty much a coin toss.

I don't often read all the comments on a "build" post, but read every one on this thread. You really made that wood look its best and then the charity donation just topped off a piece with a great looking top.
You might want to look into expanding that larger door in your shop. Might need some extra room to get in and out.
