For my first message, by way of introduction, here is a short video showing what I do :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pzK2Ei19t4
After reading many messages on this Forum of members who never owned one of my rasps wondering how good are these tools, I thought the best answer would be to give to the members of this Forum the opportunity to test one for free.
So I could send a free rasp (let say a very common one, a cabinet maker rasp) to a member who would volunteer to test it. His obligations would be to test it, to give his opinion / review in the forum and to ship it to the next tester.
Anybody interested ?
Noel Liogier
PS : - Sorry for my english, I guess it is far from perfect, but hopefully good enough to be understood. - The tester should not keep the rasp too long so the thread keeps rolling, he should live in USA to avoid too expensive shipping costs for the previous tester, and I would add he should be an active member of the Forum for some time to avoid risk of someone forgetting to ship the rasp to the next tester. - Of course, I have asked for approval from the moderators, and received a positive answer, before posting this suggestion. Thank you to them. - August Home (the owners of WoodNet) and Woodnet itself are not affiliated with this offer.

Additionally, his reviews are always top notch.

He not only makes left handed rasps, he also makes two sided rasps with two different grains at no additional charge. He is the only one that I am aware of that makes left handed rat tail rasps as well.

You are right, I didn't thought about that. I wouldn't let lefties test a rasp for right-handed person, so let's split the list in two : one rasp of right-handed woodworkers, another one for left-handed.
By the way, if anyone have any question about rasps, even the simpliest ones, please feel free to ask, I'll be glad to answer as best as I can.

Derek has reviewed the Liogier rasps. I believe he recently posted a link to an Australian forum where he had written a review of the saw maker rasps. He was quite positive about them as I recall.

Welcome to the forum and will be very interested in feedback from the good folks here on this Forum. I am a lefty also but will rely on a more experienced Woodworker using Hand Tools than I.
I don't own any good rasp's other than the saw rasp from Joel at TFWW and will be in the market for 1 or 2 in the future.
Thanks for sharing and good luck with your Beta Testers as there are many talented folks here.

Merci Joe To day, I still haven't found a dealer in USA. But feel free to send an email about my production to your favorite dealer
So I ship the rasps from here, it takes €12 (approx $15) and around 5 days to arrive. Producing on order rather than delivering on stock also has the advantage to offer the whole range, which is over 1.000 possible different rasps.

I would second Derek as he is an experienced woodworker and objective tool tester!
I would love to test a rasp, but, quite frankly, I would fit more into the type of woodworker who might damage the rasp because of my ham-fistedness!

They have a deal for free shipping this month when you buy a rasp. Did I mention that he has a left handed handle maker's rasp? I will let you know how it works when it arrives.
I currently have two Liogier rasps, an 8" flat rasp, 9gr. on one side and 13gr. on the other. I also have his rat tail rasp. Both are left handed and work very, very well. LIOGIER

So whats the story on the Sapphire vs the Traditional.... is it a coating or a different material? What would make us choose one over the other?

I have started this morning to forge your two Cabinet Makers rasps. They should be ready for shipping next week.
The difference between Sapphire and Traditional rasps is that the Sapphire coating gives extra hardness (a lot more) which makes the rasp virtually unwearable. It also prevents from rust problem and has an anti-clogging effect.
For the testers, please don't forget to send me your name and postal address via PM and if you are right or left handed so I can put you on the list.

This is really a fine idea for all parties. The WoodNetters get to try the wares and you get real world feedback. I'm already sold on your tools and am ordering some.
I suggest you loan the Sapphire coated rasps, since they could be Autoclaved, upon return.
I know where a woodworker's hands have been.

Noel,
Do you know how the coarseness of your handlemaker's rasp compares to the one sold by Tools for Working Wood? They have about 20 teeth per inch. From what I have read, the coarsest handlemaker's rasp you offer is a #9. Is that quite a bit coarser? If not, would you be able to make one that is even coarser? I love the shape of these rasps, but find myself wishing for one that would really take material off more rapidly.

What would be a good complement as a third, finer rasp for people who already own Nicholson 49 and 50 rasps?

Can they be sharpened in some fashion like the traditional rasps? And if not do you get about the same life overall or longer because you dont have to sharpen?
Thanks again!

I never hold a rasp for TFWW so I can not answer your question about the comparison of coarsness. Also because the coarseness depends on the density of teeth (or their sizes which is more or less the same criteria) as you said, but also it depends very much on the quality of the stitching : sharpness of the teeth ; their shapes, their orientation and their arrangement. In fact a key issue in rasp producing is about getting the better possible coarseness (we say "aggressivity" in French) with the smallest teeth possible (or highest density possible), in order to maximise BOTH the efficiency of the tool in removing material (in function of the pressure of the left hand, for right handed persons) AND the smoothness of the obtained surface. Maybe DereK Cohen from Perth could answer your comparison question. But I would say grain #9 is already quite a rather coarse grain. But if you want I can do one for you down to (or up to ?) grain #6.
Nib : "What would be a good complement as a third, finer rasp for people who already own Nicholson 49 and 50 rasps?"
I would pick a Cabinet Maker, 8" or 10", grain #12
Mongo : "Can they be sharpened in some fashion like the traditional rasps? And if not do you get about the same life overall or longer because you dont have to sharpen?"
I am always very cautious about resharpening methods so I am not sure which one do you refer to. But anyway the answer is that Sapphire rasps can not be resharpened, but so far I haven't met someone who has felt the need to resharpen one.
FordPerfect : "If the path these rasps take ends up in Canada, I would love to take a look at the right handed rasp" Rich's Woodcraft : "Noel had originally asked me about this exercise and I suggested he go the US route. I will fully support Richard in his suggestion if need will be.

Both of your rasps are forged now and one is stitched. I should have time to stitch the other one, do the heat-treatment and the finishing operaitons next week. Here is the list of testers after two days :
Right-handed : Blacky's Boy whutchis Fire Marshal Bibliophile 13 jossimbyr Mongo Mike D Tiger Cliff Ober Anak angkopa Jonathan S
Left-handed : Blaine Mike L B (waiting for postal address)
I first thought to do the list in order of signing in, but I finally modified it to group testers by states and as far as possible regions. I hope it is OK for you ?

henrypig BaileyNo5 tirebob FordPerfect PaulC rdwile
The rasp is being sent to Calgary first, henrypig wil be distributing it around to the members who are there.
There is still time to get yourself on this list. If you'd like to try the rasp out and write a review for your fellow Woodnetter's just send me a PM and we will make sure it makes a stop on its cross-Canada trek.

Great video, I really enjoyed that. I have never seen rasps in action like that very impressive. Obviously a lot to learn here and need some rasps. That Fellow sure knew how to make the Rasps sing. You are making a believer out of me.
Thanks for sharing !

I'm first on the "right handed" rasp list and I haven't received it yet. But rest assured, as soon as it DOES arrive I will be notifying everyone here.

I got the left-handed cabinetmaker's rasp last night. It will be a couple days before I can use it, but will pass it on as quickly as possible. It will be sent to Isaac S, then to Mike LB, then to Mac.
Interesting note is that the box the rasp was shipped in had been crushed pretty badly. The rasp survived unharmed.

My lovely wife just informed me over the phone that the package did indeed arrive several days ago. It had gotten wet and had fallen partially opened. And get this,......she placed it in the hall closet so my dog wouldn't steal the package! Admittedly he likes to steal ANYTHING he can get his mouth on. He's found that's a good way to get attention. At 1 1/2 years old he's still very much a puppy.
I asked her to open it up and make sure the contents were there. She confirmed that the rasp is indeed there. So when I get home tonight I'll take a couple photos.

Mr. Liogier, very interesting video. One can tell just from this short clip how much pride and craftmanship goes into these tools. I have read other reviews on your product and everyone is 100% on your product. I will be happy some day to add a few to my shop.
In the meantime, if you need a tester in Thailand, I am your man. Ha.

Hi gang, I wanted to post this on Friday but I got extra busy and just didn't have the time.
As I mentioned before, the rasp arrived last week but my lovely wife neglected to tell me about in until THURSDAY.
Let me just say it's a good thing these rasps are packed so well

_______________________________________ Since I had a couple of saw handles that were <ahem> less that functional (due to aborted attempts at cutting the saw slot) I decided to use one of them as a test subject. The wood is jatoba.

In use I was actually very impressed with the way this rasp could remove wood yet still leave a nice surface. I imagine their version of a saw makers rasp would work even nicer.
I'll probably give this one more work out, report back and then send it along to the next person in line.

Hi Dominic,
Thanks for the pictures. It would be great if you would post a picture of the handle before using the rasp. How long did it took to obtain the desired shape ? Cheers,

I don't have a good photo of the saw handle before I started using the rasp. The closest I have is THIS:

I would estimate that it took me under 30 minutes to get to the handle to that point. But I should point out that I was really taking my time. This rasp can remove a fair amount of material in short order and STILL leave a nice surface.

Mike,
I still have the left-handed rasp. I have not been in the shop for a couple of weeks except to help my daughter make a present for her boyfriend's birthday (today). That project did not involve much shaping of wood.
I apologize to all the lefties out there for my slowness. I'll get this moving in a couple of days.
Sorry, sorry, sorry!

Well, I had my turn and all I can say is "Wow!!". Admittedly, I have very little (no) experience using a rasp for shaping, so I probably wasn't one of the more qualified testers. I tried it on white oak, red oak, walnut and cherry. The projects I wanted to use it for are the walnut and cherry, but I wanted to try a couple of harder woods to see how it worked in them. I was very impressed at how quickly it cut and how I could control the aggressiveness by varying the pressure. I also found that very light pressure left a pretty smooth finish, but it still needed a little sanding. That said, it was light years better than the garage sale rasps I have. No pics because my stuff isn't anywhere near good enough for public viewing. Even my wife snickers a little bit when I show her something.
I shipped it this morning and Fire Marshal should have it Friday.

Which sizes did you order?
Just curious, there seem to be so many choices.
I am putting some of these on my Christmas wish list, but I need to be specific with my wife.
What would be the 3 all around "best" sized for woodworkers?

I have a 12" x#6 and a 10" x #10 Auriou .. plus a round rasp #10
They are very good, the number 6 hogs wood off ..
I ordered an 8" x #13 ? And a couple of modelers rasps in #12 and #15 grits..

Hey there. So I had the rasp over the weekend of June 2nd/3rd and used it to smooth over a plane tote. I cut the tote out of a piece of walnut, using the pattern from Lee Valley:
Currently, the only rasps I have are Nicholson #'s 49 and 50. Here's a comparison photo of the Liogier rasp and the 2 Nicholson's:
I found that the Liogier (which is a 9 grain) fell in between the 49 and 50 in coarseness of finish, but cut much more aggressively than either Nicholson.
Here's an example of the finish left behind by each rasp on the edge of the tote:
The course marks to the left trailing off the photo are the 49, the marks to the right of this area (where the chamfer is a little wider) are the #50, and the marks dead center in the photo are the Liogier (done with the flat side). The marks to the right, on the inside curve of the tote, are done with rounded side of the Liogier.
After playing around with all 3 files, I spent about 15 minutes working the outside curve of the tote with just the Liogier rasp, working to get the best finish. Here's the last photo of that edge:
Still some file marks, but they're even, and not very deep - easy to clean up with another, finer, rasp or even course sandpaper.
All-in-all, I was quite impressed, and I do plan on ordering a couple of rasps in the future when the tool budget allows.
Merci, Noel, for the opportunity to try out your fine product.

Looks like the Liogier Rasp does a pretty good job hands down compared to the Nicholson's.
Thanks for so the comparisons, these will be put on my tool list for new tools I need to buy.

Thank you Wade.
Regarding the smoothness of the surface, If I remember well I did a CM rasp with grain #9 for the pass-around test (you can check the number marked in the "square" of the rasp). If yes, a quick job with a rasp #13 should leave a satisfying surface.
Do you now if the Nicholoson #'s 49 and 50 you have used are the good old ones made in USA or are the ones made now in South-America ?

Yes, it was a #9. Thanks for the recommendation - One of the reasons I've hesitated to buy any of the European rasps is unfamiliarity with the grain system. Having played with one, I now have a "benchmark" and can better guess what one's I'll need.

I bought them about 4 years ago, and they are stamped "Made in Brazil." I've found they work pretty well, but I've had no point of comparison until now. Cheers, and thanks again.

This is a very useful thread. I own one Auriou and it's amazing. It's a 12" Grain 4 beastie, and man, can it remove some wood in a hurry. The very positive reviews on these Liogier rasps gave me the impetus to order two last night. I will soon be the owner of a 10" Grain 9 cabinet rasp and a 6" Grain 14. Depending on how much I like them, I'll add another in between the Gr 9 and Gr 14. I already own some Gramercy rasps that can fit that bill.
On that note, is there a comparison chart on the Auriou and Liogier Grains vs. the tpi that we see for Gramercy rasps?

Laughing at me ..
I got an email from La Post today .... I ordered some Loggier rasps..
So being Canadian .... I figured the email was from Quebec.. ( French Canada ) ..
Got annoyed that they didn't send me the message in English..
Spent an hour annoyed..
Then showed it to someone who read French.. They said its the Post office of France .. So that's okay ..
Sorry France..
Then it occurs to me that I should have had the person that speaks French tell me what it actually said .. Wondering if I need to do anything ? .. lol
These things tend to work out ..

This is surely just an email from La Poste tracking system to inform you that the parcel is on its way. If you want to be sure, forward it to me and I'll translate it to you.
I hope you will enjoy the rasps I did for you,

Long time, maybe too long ?, since there has been no post on this 3 pass-around rasps.
As far as I know, here is the situation :
The USA right-handed rasp : last known place at Fire Marshal, probably sent onward to Bibliophile 13 ?
The USA left-handed rasp : last known place at Blaine ?
The Canadian rasp : last known place at Tirebob, probably sent onward to I don't know who ?
Gentlemen, please confirm, and if possible, do as agreed : post your comments and send the rasp onward to the next tester.

Gentlemen, please confirm, and if possible, do as agreed : post your comments and send the rasp onward to the next tester.
The Rasp on the Canadian side of the border has most definitely been passed on the FordPerfect. I posted in the other pass around thread focusing on Canada's turn so it may have gotten missed here. I LOVED it for the record! I am going to France from Aug 3rd until Aug 17th, and if this didn't fall during your holidays when you are closed, I would have been making a stop by your factory to cherck it out and make a few purchases!
I sent it out July 3rd and it landed at FordPerfects on July 5th... Haven't heard tell since. I am sure he is just giving it a good workout!

Umm.... between a nasty summer flu and other issues the rasp has been doing little else than weighing down my bench
I plan to use it tonight and then send it off to PaulC on Friday. Sorry for holding it for so long.

I bought 3 Logier rasps to round out my set, they are a pleasure to use. No regrets here.

wow
Noel went to great lengths to pass around the rasps on his dime and some people feel the need to hold on to them for more than a week or two?
Sorry - but this is ridiculous. These are quality rasps and Noel as well as potential buyers deserves to have the chance to get more feedback than this in a timely manner.

Sorry about the delay, guys. The right-handed rasp is en route to me as we speak. I'm afraid I've got a busy month ahead, so it may be a couple weeks before I can test it out and post my impressions here and on my blog. I'll do it as quickly as I can, though.

I would have been interested in trying the left handed rasp. BUT I could see it was going to take a while so I stepped out in faith, based on the responce of what people wrote about them here on the forum, I just broke down and ordered 2 of them.
I have had several times when a rasp would have come in handy, but I have found that buying what is available off from a store rack or shelf is just a waist of money. Later I bought a Nickelson patternmakers #49 rasp and it worked quite well. I don't remember exactlly what I paid for it, somewhere a round $50.
I got to thinking about what size to get and how much lenght I really needed and so on. My point is I don't need a 10 0r 12 inch rasp and my thoughts were if you really can use a rasp that cuts well and I need one that cuts fine to finer and a if you are willing to buy a $50 for a right handed rasp made in Brizal why not buy a couple correct handed ( left handed because we leftys are in our right mind) make by Logier.
I think they will save me time and effort so I didn't wait to try one. I ordered it a couple of weeks ago, maybe 3. I did get a welcome and a number from the company but I have no idea where I am in their process at the moment. It would be nice to know if mine have even been started yet. I will probable contact them in a week or so to fid out.
So to some who are waiting to try one out you can step out in faith.

I FINALLY got some time at the workbench this afternoon, so I've been playing around with the rasp.

To be honest, I have virtually no experience with high-quality rasps, so I'm not going to try to put this up against other rasps. What I can do is to put it up against other tools in the shop that perform similar functions: shaping curves and profiles.
I'm working on a write-up for my blog, and I'll post it here once I'm done.

Okay, my evaluation is now posted at my blog.
Thank you, Noel, for letting me try out this rasp. I've really enjoyed playing around with a premium tool like this.
I will be forwarding it to the next recipient within the week.

Folks, a public apology. I had that left-hand rasp for all too long. Because I did not get into the shop to use the rasp, I sent it along to Isaac S. in August.

I sent the right-handed rasp off to its next recipient today. I was sorry to see it go, as I would have liked to play around with it more, but we need to keep this thing moving.
This experience has moved a hand-stitched rasp nearer to the top of my tool acquisition list. Especially if I start making pipes on a regular basis, a hand-stitched rasp is going to be a big help.

It appears that the last movement of the test rasps was about two months ago.
Whoever is sitting on them isn't doing Noel or the downstream testers any favors. I doubt Noel would have offered the chance for all of us to test his products if he'd known they might disappear into the fog here...
Isn't it time for a couple of folks to get off their tails and move the rasps down the line? If you haven't had time to try them out just send them on to someone who does.

I have been wondering about this, knowing I am on the list and wanting to make sure I can move them along quickly once they reach me.
Is the following still the current list?
I would love to be able to estimate when my turn will come up, but that looks like a pretty challenging thing to estimate.

The lists are still open, above all the one for lefties

I should be next after "jossimbyr" who should have them since Bibliophile 13 had them last.
They wont sit long with me either. Kinda disappointed in how this has played out.

Average time in possession for the righties is about 2 months per person. Seems more than enough time to test it out. On the other hand, I'm sure this thread has spawned numerous sales of Liogier rasps - myself included.

Not sure it got picked up here but I posted a video review of the same rasp that was sent around the Canadian pass-around test.

Sorry for the tardiness of my reply, but I haven't been on here in a few days. I just finished responding to a PM Noel had sent, asking what the status of the rasp was. Unfortunately, I never received the righty rasp (or the lefty, for that matter), so I have no idea who has it or where it might be. I was really looking forward to testing it out on a hand mirror I was making for my wife for our anniversary. If the rasp ever makes its way here, I guess I'll have to make another mirror to test it out on.

Last I knew, I had sent the right-handed rasp out at the end of September. A month later, the next guy on the list still hadn't received it. I really, really hope it hasn't become a victim of the USPS, but I'm afraid that might have happened.

Oh Wow what a shame, I hate to hear that, and have had that happen to me a couple times. I still get nervous with the mail service and every time I send something I notify the person to whom I am sending what ever and then follow up with them.
Hopefully this wil show up at some point un damaged.

Even if they did, with USPS it's all but worthless.
Something of this value should have gone UPS or FedEx...

I don't, I'm afraid. I sent it out with a batch of packages and didn't think to do any kind of tracking. Of course, out of everything I sent out, that's the only one that got lost.

I have the left handed rasp and must say what a joy it has been to use. I cannot claim to have a lot of experience using files and rasps but I am finding myself using them more and more. This is the first time I have ever used a left handed rasp and did not know they even existed until a while ago. I can say that for the longest time I could not figure out why I had such difficulty using files until I sat down and really looked at a right handed file and the lights came on. It will be very hard to go back, so I am starting to count my pennies to order set of Liogier rasps. Thanks Noel, a class act!

Lee Valley does indeed carry some of them, but not the full line, just the premium "sapphire" line. Otherwise, I'm not aware of a US dealer yet. I'll bet we will see one soon, though.

Well, technically, Lee Valley is a Canadian dealer. Their US sales are shipped from a US distribution center. It's probably easier to import their items into the US in bulk vs. putting customs documents on every individual package were they shipped from Canada.
