Hi all, I am in the market for a 12" or bigger stationary disc sander. Harbor Freight is out of the question, I picked up one of their 12" units and the machine vibrated too much from the disc that was not true. So that leaves me with a few other options, price is only 50% of the decision. I could get a Jet or Delta, or should I pick up a used vintage Powermatic 12" for $275 or 20" Lincoln for $500.
Another set of options would include the Grizzly products, and of course a disc/belt combo. Does anyone ever use the belt side of their combo units? How does Grizzly stack up against the others?

That Powermatic sounds nice - don't know much about the Lincoln. I'm in the market right now also and think I'm going to try for vintage, i.e. Max or State. Guys over at OWWM seem to be high on them. Might want to do a CL search.
Good luck,
Doug

I am not big on 12" disc sanders. You really have only about 1/4 of the disk that is usable. I find a oscillating edge sander much more useful. If I did get a Disc sander if would hve to be a 20" or bigger.

I bought a ca. 50 year old Delta from a guy here on woodnet. I had the motor redone by an old guy at a motor shop who was thrilled to work on one of these old motors. What a great sander, smooth and quiet. I'm glad I got an old one. Ken

I like the jet. I don't own one, but were I buying today it would be the jet.
If the used powermatic runs true though, that's probably a better deal.

Can`t help with info on current crop of sanders, mine is ancient Sears belt disk. As stated the disc`s only offer a smallish area for true work. I probably use the belt side 20 times to the disc`s 1. I worked around a 24" disc sander once that was dead on. All we used it for was sanding end grain closed using a jig system. The jig made it very accurate, and could only feed stock at a true 90*, but it turned this thing into a paper hog as you couldn`t do much to move the jig, so it just ate up the one area on the paper. This was before hook and loop, so you sanded for 20 minutes, maybe, then needed to change paper. Depending on heat mostly that often took almost as long, terrible job

+1. That's a nice price on a PM disc sander, assuming it's in good condition.
The 20" Lincoln is probably three phase, perhaps dual voltage 230/460 or whatever. If you're willing to get up into the $500+ range and are willing to work w/ 3ph, I'd suggest holding and keeping an eye out for a 16 - 20" Max or State.

I have one of those combo belt/disc sanders.. The disk on mine was pretty small (8 or 9 inches). Didn't really use it much. Use the belt quite a bit.
I really lucked out and found someone selling a homemade disk sander (18") on CL. Works great but only gets used occasionally. If it broke tommorrow, I probably wouldn't replace it.
IMO, disk sanders are nice for breaking the edge on aluminum/steel and for taking a little bit off the end of wood. With jigs, they are useful for trueing up angles on the edge of wood. Kind of limited. I would only recommend buying one if you had a particular need in mind.

I have the belt and disc for a shopsmith. AWESOME and VS. I use the belt the most and have a VS power stand it is on. If I were buying from the discs on your list I would go 20" 3ph and a VFD but a friend owns the 12" Jet and it is VERY SOLID for a 12".
