Painter's plastic on the floor. Wet ceiling with a garden sprayer or airless w/ 1237 (or thereabouts) tip. Scrape with a 12" knife into a mud pan. Empty pan into trash can. It goes very quickly.

Thats what I did. I was suprised at how easy it was.

when I did our 330 sq. ft. living room last year, I took one of those and mounted it to a wide floor sweep attachment for the shop vac. I have pictures of the build and final product in my google picasa account, but I can't get to it from work and repost. If you can dig 'em up, feel free.

I tried a shop vac a few years back. It didn't work all that well. The wet popcorn coming off the ceiling got stuck in the hose. I also tried a setup with catching it in a grocery bag attached to a coat hanger. That didn't work well either. I think I am going to go with the 8 or 10" blade and a mud pan or maybe try to just land it into the trash can. I did read that supposedly adding vinegar to the mix will make it really easy to get the stuff off, I will try that and see what happens.

How well does that work? Any problems with it being attached to the shop vac hose? The other advantage for me not using the shop vac is I can work at night when everyone is asleep.

It worked great. I used my garden pump sprayer to dampen the popcorn and let it set for about 10 minutes, then went to work with the scraper and the shopvac. I used the drywall bags in the vac to avoid plugging the filter, and 330 sq. ft. managed to completely fill two bags, and the third was 1/2 to 2/3 full by the time I was done. There was very little to clean up off the floor, but that wasn't an issue either since I scraped the ceiling right after I ripped the carpet out. There was no dust, however - there was enough suction from the vac to keep the hose clear and pull in any dust that wasn't quite damp enough.

Seems to be the easiest way, but don't bother putting a bag in it, it's useless and you'll spend more time emptying than scraping. I would also get one of those extender painters poles so you're not on a ladder right above your head. Hope your shoulders are in good shape, or they will be sore in the morning!

I scraped my ceilings without wetting. It didn't scrape everything off. I then primered with KILZ three times and painted twice. I got a nice effect that goes with my knockdown wall texturing.
