I hit Woodcraft after work this afternoon and picked up some anchorseal. When I got home I could see some cracks already starting on the ends. I was able to cut off an inch or so on each end and eliminate the cracks. Then I cut the pieces into about 10" lengths, cut them down the middle and sealed the ends right away. Here's what I have so far:
I'll have to try the rest of the pile tomorrow. Thanks for all the help!

I think that it is Bill Grumbine.
I have to try laying the log on its side. Trying to cut them in half while vertical is not going well for me.
Yak, Thanks for the link. I was there a long time ago but lost the link (and forgot about laying them on the side )

Cutting the flat on the bottom side of your bowl blank really helps when you are trimming off the corners of the blank, or if you did a good enough job, cutting a circle on the bandsaw.

My goal is to get the bowl rough turned within a week after the wood gets to my house. That oak will crack on you real quick.

Best reason in the world to keep it in long log form. One user end which can be covered with a plastic bag. I don't rush, so on a roughing day I'll do maybe eight bowls, which is 4 pieces, and four shop hours. A pulp length log will potentially give me six pieces in the 12-16 size, but the result of a twelve-bowl day is posted in the frustration section. Rather not rush.
Not even Birkis can save your arches on a day like that, either.

Got a bandsaw? If you want, you can bring your blanks over and we'll "round" 'em up for you. I'll give you some tips (the little I know) as well.
Yak is right, come to keystone. Great group. I'm going to make it next month thankfully.
Ps. - I like Guiness too. . j/k

Thanks William! I have a bandsaw but haven't had much luck with it. I tried tuning it today and installed a new woodslicer blade and had much better results. Was able to get a decent round blank out of one piece and roughed out a bowl. It's smaller than I hoped for but it's something.
I'm planning to attend the next keystone turners meeting. Hope to meet a few of you guys there!
