Son in law just called. They have a septic tank that drains to a holding tank with an effluent pump, that pumps the liquid up to the field. Seems the GFI breaker that the pump plugs into is toast. He ran an extension cord to an GFI outlet in the house. It tripped within a minute. He now has the pump plugged into a NON GFI outlet, and it is working. I realize this is dangerous and is only a temporary solution. I assume the pump has a "leak" of electricity causing the GFI to trip. We hope to replace the pump tomorrow. I am going to go look at it first thing, try to get a handle on what we need.
Any words of wisdom? I wish I owned a gas mask and a hasmat suit... It looks like the pump is readily accessible, so that is a plus.

Words of wisdom... Yeah, don't have anything to eat or drink for at least four hours prior to replacement.

Check all the connections on the pump.

Agree with connections check. It's likely the wires/wiring has gotten wet.

Good news. I replaced the gfi outlet ( bought on sale to boot! ). And all is good. After thinking about it I am going to have my son in law check the extension cord- it may be the culprit

Or too long?
I would keep an eye on the new GFI for a couple days to be safe. So nice you didn't have to mess with the pump.

I cycled the pump a couple of times and the GFI did not trip. Son in law is going to get a little decorative yard light and plug it in with the pump- light on, pump on, light off, oh fecal matter.
The good news is, if the pump has to be messed with, it is a pretty easy swap- pvc pipe from the pump comes up near the opening, cut it off, and glue a coupling back on for the reinstall.
