A coworker is getting married, and asked if I could make her a cake stand. She saw an antique one online she liked but it was $400. So this is my wedding present to her:

Nice. Cherry? Do you mind posting the dimensions? I would like to make my wife one, perhaps add a "lip" around the top to better contain the cake plate. Don

Thanks.
It's walnut, but the picture makes it look a little lighter. It is a little over 12" across, 7" high, and the base is around 6" across at the bottom. The wedding planner said no lip; It is easier to cut this way.

Looks nice. How did you attached the top to the base?

The finish is BLO followed by Minwax Antique Oil which was then buffed.
To attach the top, there is another piece that you can't see. That piece is long grain like the top, and has a mortise on the bottom side. I glued and screwed it onto the stem, and then glued the top to that transition piece with the same grain orientation as the top.
One thing worked out well: The top was too big for my lathe, so I made it with a router jig. That left a shallow 1/2" wide recess in the bottom of the top. I drilled a matching hole in the transition piece, and used a small loose tenon to align the two pieces during glue up.
I gave it to my friend this morning and she was just over the moon about it. So that felt pretty good.

Great piece. I bet in the darker walnut this look fantastic. Got a thang for walnut. Nicely done and appreciated the description on how you connected the pieces together. Thanks!
