coin rack new
      #5991699 - 07/14/12 04:05 PM

A LT at my work asked if I could make her a coin rack as she has been bugging me to make her something for some time now. She gave me the specs and I built this out of mahogany. She didn't want any etching or carving, but wanted it "plain, and dark"

At any rate, this is mahogany - the joints were made with my new ibox (wow, that is easy to set up and use)

The finish is gel stain followed up by 3 coats of water based enduro poly. I think I've found a new finish... holy cow it dries fast and rubbs out nicely. I was able to get three no-kidding dry (white powder) between coats in about 4 hours.

The glass lifts out to remove, and it just rides in a groove. The black middle part is corkboard topped by black loop (the fuzzy side of velcro) To mount it, I have a small french cleat in the back.

I put some of my own stuff in for the pics

At any rate, thanks for looking,

Lawrence

When I first saw coin rack I had visions of penny's rolling around . Very nice!

Nice work! I'll bet the LT will love it and treasure it forever. You are the first person I have heard use the new Ibox from Incra. How do you like it? I have several Incra tools, rulers, and a 1000HD miter guage, all are top notch at what they do.

Greating looking coin rack, Lawrence. I first imagined something that sat on a desk rather than something that was mounted on the wall. Still, beautiful job, and I will have to look into your new finishing schedule.

But I will say that when I was a young LT, I did not have the coins to even come close to filling that rack. So it looks like she will have room to expand over at least an O-4 career!

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks guys- I appreciate it.

Larry, I REALLY like the ibox. It has made making box joints my "go-to" joint. In the past I would contemplate miters, then dovetails using my ls-positioner, then box joints... if I made box joints on the ls-positioner, I thought they were "ok" but didnt like the blowout that always seemed to happen. If I made them on the tablesaw, I liked the fact that I didn't get any blowout, but hated the fact that I could never seem to get my dado set to cooperate with my box joints... so I'd end up almost making a new box joint key for every project it seemed...

The ibox was the solution to both and I find it VERY simple and almost idiotproof (I'm proof of that!)

Steve, the finish was simple... and a little unnerving to try on a project. I stained all the parts before assembly then put on a thin coat of enduro water based varnish with a good brush. I let this dry (basically by the time I was done with the last piece, the first was dry to the touch. I carried he pieces inside the house and had a cup of tea. By the time I was done, a touch of sandpaper revealed "white powder" which I take to mean that the finish is dry... really suprised me! I added on another, slightly thicker coat and it did dried just about as quickly. After this I rubbed the pieces down with a burgundy 3m scrubbie. I then added one, quite thin coat, letting it dry for about 2 hours. The final "finish" is a very light buffing with johnson's paste wax. I really like the effect as it seems to be almost as easy as my normal "rude and crude" finish, but is MUCH quicker. The markings you see on the box joints are my fault... I should have taken more care when block planing off the box joints... I'm so used to wet-sanding with rude and crude where that wouldn't be necessary, but I learned something new I guess!

Thanks again for the comments,
Lawrence
