Why not cut a couple pieces of plywood to kind of fit like the plastic ones and fasten it to the ladder. Then if you wanted you could still put on the "plastic" bumpers, but they would be supported.

Sounds like you would still have a hard surface to scar walls, siding, whatever.
I use the old towels and duct tape trick also. I do like the idea of the foam though.

Spray foam would work. Or just drill a small hole through the pads & the ladder & tie them on.

Spray foam would be the choice. It's polyurethane based and acts as an adhesive. Same like gorilla glue, just easier to apply to large cavities.
