I have been buying saw files here and there. Who makes a good saw file? Mostly the smaller sizes, 4,4x,4xx,5xx. Thanks

Sorry, I should have said "Manufactures of good saw files" not sellers. Thank you.

I have bought files from TFWW before. No problems. I was curious having seen files made in Mexico,( supposed to be soft), as well as Brazil. I came across a couple the other day made in USA, obviously old. So I thought I would ask.

The big four are/were
Nicholson Grobet Simonds Bahco/Sandvik
Of course, there is a caveat. Since Nicholson outsourced/moved their file manufacturing, their quality has gone down greatly. I believe they've pretty much ended their US manufacturing, so most of their new stuff isn't too good. But if you can find the US made stuff in NOS somewhere, it is top notch.
If I'm not mistaken, the others may also have lower quality files made in the third world and/or china or wherever, but each still have quality lines available.
The best source is TFWW, IMO.

I put Grobet #1 and Simonds #2, but IMO, NOS Disston, Heller and Nicholson are good as well...if you can find them...

Heller! Jack, I'd forgotten them entirely! You're absolutely right though (as always), they were good.... They were bought out by Simonds in 1955...

Disston did have good files also. I remember using "Keystone" files also - were they Disston? I believe they were, "Keystone Saw Works" and all that.
I haven't seen either in person for a long time - but there is still some NOS of both out there, I'm sure.
