Shop setup input? new
      #6014097 - 08/01/12 11:58 AM

For me summer is fishing season and winter is woodworking season. However, this summer has been so hot, I've spent more time in the shop and less on the water.

I've been spending most of my time working on getting the shop equipped and organized. And collecting plans and ideas for when I finish it. Most of my projects have been cabinets, shelves etc and I've purchased some new toys. 8" jointer, 3 1/4hp router motor, some new handplanes. As I work on the shop, questions pop into my head. What do you think, or better yet, what has your experiance taught you.

I have wheels on all my power tools, good or bad?
Is it better for stability and organization if some tools don't have wheels?
I am using a MFT for a outfeed table that I might want to change. Do you like a plain table/platform or a cabinet type outfeed?
What's your opinion on pegboard?
Overhead cabinets vs overhead shelves?
Base cabinets, good or waste of floor and wall space?
Storage cabinet under workbench, yes or no?
I see drill presses often in corners, is this good or are there too many times you need a longer space for longer boards?

Do you have any organization thingies, cabinets, racks, tables, whatever that every time you look at it you think "I am a genius for making or buying that"?

Thanks,

Mike

I have wheels on all my power tools, good or bad?
Depends on the tool and your space
Is it better for stability and organization if some tools don't have wheels?
Yes. Drill press and lathe don't like wheels. Bandsaw, is iffy
I am using a MFT for a outfeed table that I might want to change. Do you like a plain table/platform or a cabinet type outfeed?
What's "MFT"?
What's your opinion on pegboard?
I don't use it
Overhead cabinets vs overhead shelves?
Cabinets - easier to keep stuff clean
Base cabinets, good or waste of floor and wall space?
Base cabs and drawers
Storage cabinet under workbench, yes or no?
Drawers only
I see drill presses often in corners, is this good or are there too many times you need a longer space for longer boards?
I leave space for longer boards around my DP - I can go up to 6ft overhang on either side

You definitely have the priorities correct...

I have wheels on all my power tools, good or bad?
Yep, even in a relatively fixed shop it's a good thing
Is it better for stability and organization if some tools don't have wheels?
Maybe the drill press, but I do have wheels under mine
I am using a MFT for a outfeed table that I might want to change. Do you like a plain table/platform or a cabinet type outfeed?
I kinda like a cabinet under the TS outfeed
What's your opinion on pegboard?
Not in my shop, it sucks...
Overhead cabinets vs overhead shelves?
Both, they both have a purpose
Base cabinets, good or waste of floor and wall space?
Having some is good.
Storage cabinet under workbench, yes or no?
Yes, but my bench is out away from the wall...
I see drill presses often in corners, is this good or are there too many times you need a longer space for longer boards?
That's where mine is, and it's a pain...but it doesn't get used all that much, either.

Do you have any organization thingies, cabinets, racks, tables, whatever that every time you look at it you think "I am a genius for making or buying that"?
So far I haven't seen anything that made me think I'm a genius.

Thanks,

Mike

The best advice I can give for organizing is to try the free Grizzly online shop planner. It's easy and everything's to scale. grizzly.com/workshopplanner.aspx

Most of mine do, Drill press, jointer and 16" ras's do not.
Is it better for stability and organization if some tools don't have wheels?
IMO. yes, no wheels on a drill press.
I am using a MFT for a outfeed table that I might want to change. Do you like a plain table/platform or a cabinet type outfeed?
Mines removable, I don't usually rip long boards.
What's your opinion on pegboard?
It sucks.
Overhead cabinets vs overhead shelves?
Cabinets
Base cabinets, good or waste of floor and wall space?
Depends on the shop layout. I don't have any.
Storage cabinet under workbench, yes or no?
Just a shelf.
I see drill presses often in corners, is this good or are there too many times you need a longer space for longer boards?
Mine is along a wall.

Do you have any organization thingies, cabinets, racks, tables, whatever that every time you look at it you think "I am a genius for making or buying that"?
Ummm, no. Usually the opposite, "What was I thinking?

Thanks,

Mike

Another set of answers/opinions:

I have wheels on all my power tools, good or bad?

----Agree with others---no drill press or lathe---bandsaw if you are careful.

Is it better for stability and organization if some tools don't have wheels?

----Depends on the amount of space you have.

I am using a MFT for a outfeed table that I might want to change. Do you like a plain table/platform or a cabinet type outfeed?

----If you're table saw is to be in a fixed position, then a cabinet type outfeed is great. But if you move things around, you'll want something that you can easily adjust the height to keep it even with the table saw table.

What's your opinion on pegboard?

---Used to turn up my nose at it until I priced slot board and hooks. Also always thought I'd build a wall tool cabinet, but each tool would have to have it's own support within the cabinet. Peg board just turned out to be the easiest way to organize and easily find tools-----I painted mine white which added to easy of finding tools and better shop lighting.

Overhead cabinets vs overhead shelves?

----Shelves or lumber racks. If you have 10 ft. ceilings, just figure you aren't going to make frequent use of whatever you store up on the walls.

Base cabinets, good or waste of floor and wall space?

---Lots of variations----rolling cabinets that slide into openings, etc. Long cabinet/bench tops a must for a permanent miter saw station. Work surfaces are always useful. Just balance the lower cabinet designs with where you're going to put your floor power tools.

Storage cabinet under workbench, yes or no?

--- Drawers only. Shelves on lower cabinets are a PITA to access.

I see drill presses often in corners, is this good or are there too many times you need a longer space for longer boards?

---Don't put a drill press in a corner.

Do you have any organization thingies, cabinets, racks, tables, whatever that every time you look at it you think "I am a genius for making or buying that"?

I have the Woodriver Universa; Mobile Base under my BS. I like it and it is very stable when rolling and in use. It always makes me a little nervous when switching modes so I may eventually connect the 2 pedals with a board (if I get around to it).

I am blanking on the brand of mobile base under the RAS. It sets the RAS down on the RAS feet when it is not rolling.

For the larger Jet lathe, I have set up removable end panel with wheels. I am using the extendable wheel jacks that NTool sells for trailer tongues for the wheels. The smaller lathes, I just lift onto small NTool dollies under each end when I move them around. I am still fine-tuning a mobile base design for our Woodfast M508 lathe.

With up to 4 of us in the shop at one time, pretty much everything needs to be mobile. All 4 of us are turners, but I have not gotten any of the others over to flat work yet.

For mobility of a wheeled base, and steadiness of no base I think this idea wins every time. I`m referring to the base at the top of the article.

Set up is going to be driven by your methods of work, but if you have a TS I don`t have a plan for it NOT being smack dab in the middle of the shop, and if you want outfeed, and storage cabinets I don`t have a good thought for mobile. I`m glad I don`t have to
