Removing chewing gum from pine
      #6017230 - 08/03/12 06:11 PM

I'm going to refinish a bed for my neighbor. His kid has left chewing gum in the headboard all over the place. Any suggestions on how to best remove it? It's made from pine and there is practically no finish on it.

Thanks,

Carl

Check Amazon there are chewing gum removers—I've never used one. If your neighbor wants a stain you will need to use gel stain. I've had good luck with GF but I wipe on with one hand and even out/wipe off with the other. It takes some practice. The waterborne stains are really a two person operation. One to apply the stain the other to wipe off.

BTW the GF is an oil so the rags can spontaneously combust.

Chewing gum is soluble in paint thinner, naphtha, toluene and acetone. Start by chilling each piece with an ice cube, which makes it brittle, use a putty knife to scrape off as much as you can. Then go at it with one of the solvents and lots of clean rags or paper towels. Whatever stains are left are best removed with a scraper or a plane.

Make the kid peel it off. Then use the acetone.

I've got to learn to think in simpler, more practical terms. Richard, you have a gift.
