Just finished stripping, brightening, and refinishing my 12x20 ft deck plus 2 sets of deck stairs, wrap-around bench, and verticals supporting deck. Took photos to share. Deck is 12 year old Pressure Treated Pine. I had totally stripped and refinished 3 years ago with Behr acrylic ... began to chip and peel within 3 months and was 60% gone within a year. Researched this past spring on how to strip the Behr remnants off, strip mildew stains off, brighten, and what to put down. Opted to go with HD-80 as a stripper accompanied with pressure washer to agitate the stripper-loosening of the old deck coating and mildew. Opted to go with Armstrong Clark semi-transparent oil based coating and blended 2 colors (cedar + rustic brown) to get what we wanted.
Before ... peeling, chipping, weathered dark wood. Looks like crap. Didn't know if I could restore it back to a decent appearance.

Here are some pre-stain / stained images of the deck. The pre-stained photos are after stripping, brightening, and light sanding ... they are on the left of each photo. The stained photos on the right side of each photo group are after one coat of deck stain.

Also decided to do the same thing to my PT pine adirondak chairs. Here is their pre-stained / stained group photo.

And now the great experiment begins ... weathering of the freshly coated deck and chairs. The Behr also looked good right after application 3 years ago. I do expect to recoat the horizontal deck surfaces next summer as the deck is in the sun all day long. However, everything I've read about Armstrong Clark tells me it'll only require a light cleaning with 50/50 mix of Clorox and water followed by a light pressure wash then a recoat of the same stain as I put on this past week. No more deck stripping ... hopefully.

Looks nice! But check Consumer Reports June last year they have some outdoor finishes that are going on 9 years. I have some outdoor stuff done with GF450 going on 5+years that's still fine. I haven't been favorably impressed with Behr.

CU publishes current results each year in their June or July issue. The most recent results are in the June 2012 issue. Local libraries typically will have the magazine.

Good choice with A/C. We clean using just a squirt of dishwater soap and then recoat.

Nice work! Looks great.
As to chipping and peeling---that depends on just how much pigment is in the finish. I've tried to stay away from the more vivid color stains for the deck after an unpleasant experience with a stain I used on one of the fences. As you described, it was chipping and pealing in no time. While it looked kind of rustic left on it's own.
Depending on how often you clean (and light cleaning in between major cleaning) as to how aggressive the main cleaning has to be. We get a lot of shade and tree fall-out, so it's pretty much a given we have to do a deep cleaning just to get out the dirt.

Wow!!! Consumer reports surprised me. They are usually pretty reliable in their recommendations.

Who said they weren't reliable???? Sorry, but my experience has found they're spot on the money 99% of the time on paints and stains.

I never said that CR wasn't reliable. I usually check with them before buying anything major.

Sorry--but it didn't sound like that was what you were saying. I learned the hard way to always check the most recent tests before buying paint. For years they recommended Sears interior paint----so without checking I bought some to do a bedroom and kitchen. Not only didn't it cover well, but the colors came no where close to matching the sample chips. Come to find out they were now recommending Ace---which made a world of difference, but now even that has changed.
