I might be moving my GO490 (well, having it moved...) Is it safe to just pick it up by the tables? How about pulling the motor out and then carrying it by the tables?

They're not designed to be carried by the tables. However, after removing the entire base my G0586 came out of 1 basement and into mine carried by the tables. Also did the same with a friend's 8" Delta. They're both chugging along just fine.

Why don't you get those orange straps for lifting furniture and stuff that LV sells. I did, and they really help. I would never suggest lifting a jointer by the table unless it is like mine....

Yep, load slings wrapped around the center body. You can lift the slings with a 2x (or 2). I wouldn't chance lifting it by the tables, odds are it may be fine but there's always that chance......

Think of how you would hoist a car. You wouldn't hoist by the steering parts, because they are precision alignment items. So are jointer tables. Take it apart, or strap it to a pallet, and hoist from the bottom.
I learned this lesson from an old man who I worked with in a shop. He seemed ancient, but he was probably as old as I am now. When we were moving machinery in the shop, Harold always said, "Don't go hoisting that thing by its lady parts."

When I picked up my PM 50 jointer from a used equipment dealer, he picked it up with a fork lift, under the tables, but close to the base. He said he did it this way all the time.

I don't know about the Griz but Powermatic, in the manual for my new PJ-882, says do not lift by the infeed and outfeed tables. This could lead to misalignment of the tables. They actually supply 4 rods that pull out from the base to hook straps onto for lifting.
I figure any large jointer would risk the same when lifting from the beds.

I've moved three times with professional movers and they pizz and moan about it but don't let them pick up by the tables. Make them use straps under the base. There's a whole lot of difference between machinery movers and regular movers. Stand there and watch too.

All I'll say is before I knew anything about jointer's I took my table's off and put them back on and never checked any kind of table adjustment I just made sure my blades where set right and till this day it still makes a perfect 90.

I'd avoid the tables. I have lifted mine off the floor to get it on blocks but I don't think I'd want to move it any distance.
Most big machines have provisions for moving. My Oliver has lifting hooks bolted to it.
