Cute pictures, Blaine. Of course hand tools make any event more special, but we'll take what we can get.

If you two want to spend more father-daughter time together, you could always compromise by taking her shopping at Woodcraft and Rockler.

Blaine great job and the fact you spent some quality time with your Daughter and her with you in the shop is awesome.

I love these kind of stories and it is great you were there to help and the fact your Daughter wanted to help is really super and she can take credit for an awful lot of the construction as well.

My Daughter is also a teacher, she teaches 6th grade History and every year ( 11 ) I have helped her with some project / projects for her classroom. And you are right it is on her time and her dime ( Dad has helped as well ) and those are very enjoyable moments that will last for ever and look forward to it.

Thanks for sharing your story and "Kudo's" to your Daughter !

Steve

For those who are hand tool purists, you're not going to like this project.
For those who know her, I think they'd all say that she's about as feminine as a woman can get. While she was the only kid on her Jr. High Mission trip who knew how to use a power drill, spending time in the shop is not her idea of the perfect morning. Because I'm not much of a shopper, I kinda jumped at the chance to spend some high quality time with her on this project. Here are some pics of what we did.

Always good when both a labor of and an object of love are in the shop at the same time. Start 'em young.

Yes, from the look, she's critiquing Poppa's dry assembly!

I gave my daughter a full homeowner's kit when she took her apartment up at school. It did include a battery drill, but was mostly hand tools. When she married, we got her a snowblower as a wedding present. Not the wisest decision, given the guy she married, who kept trying to tell her he didn't want to play with her toys....

Neat stuff! I think some of the best posts are the stories behind the projects...
A friend of mine taught 2nd grade, and gave a "home" to 2 child size Windsor chairs I'd made. The kids really liked "their size" furniture!

Thanks for all the kind words, everybody. We all get too little time to spend with our kids, so we have to treasure what we get and this one was a real treasure.

Steve, you commented about some of the "hidden" costs of teaching. You're right. Christi has spent a lot of time and a lot of her own money to get her classroom ready. She has purchased scores of books for her classroom library, all the items you'll see on the table in the picture below, all the decorations for the bulletin boards, tissues, wipes, towels, and a whole lot more. This first year is the hardest because there's so much needed to make the room "yours". There are a lot of people who don't appreciate what good teachers do outside of class time. I will say that the local parent's organization does give each teacher $350 each year for these purposes, but I suspect my daughter has spent twice that out of her own pocket.

Here's one picture of the tables in their place in the classroom.

Now that makes sense! When I've seen those tables in the opening post, they seemed rather narrow to me. Seeing how they are used they match perfectly! Great idea!
