help with finishing new
      #6035330 - 08/19/12 05:26 PM

I've been building a small coffee table for outdoor use out of laminated pine. I put a golden oak stain on it, two coats, and I would like to put a finish on it that will keep the table clean and allow me to clean it. I am not exactly sure what to use, any suggestions.

Ask for oil based tint base at a good paint store. It dries pretty clear. Standard wood finishes fail in the sun very quickly - it's the UV that kills them and the wood.

The oil tint bases are not all that available any more, but GF 450 works very well.

If you plan to leave it out year round AND Clearmont is the one in California, the sun could be a problem. Thompsons water seal is a prety good solution for doors and fence gates. Film coats may blister, recoating every year or so and wiping the waterseal down is a pretty good option.

If you do choose to go with the untinted paint, be sure to get the highest number base they have, that would be #4 for most brands...and it needs to be the oil base.

Curious? The brand or the concept?

No argument, but 30 years of success on west facing Arizona doors. Not always Thompsons BTW

I would not use or even consider the product for interior furniture of any kind.

THX!

Just as a deck sealer, in my experience it is inferior to anything else I have used.
