I'm familiar with L'Art du Menuisier both in the French and in the Lost Arts translation. Have you read it? IMHO the guy took things out of context. But stuff changes with time and experience.Did you read either of the references that I linked too?

Wax is also not a finish as it does not protect the wood. Would you say a spit shine with shoe polish is a finish? It seems to fit your definition.
BTW what dictionary—there are bunches out there and many are not good for specialized terms. Checkout Wood Finishing
OK, we will use your definition:
"Wood finishing refers to the process of embellishing and/or protecting the surface of a wooden material."
Oil embellishes the wood, and therefore is a "finish".

OK that's a meaningless definition. Under that water would be a finish as would be MS. If you stopped with the firs part it would work.
So you got me on the Wikipedia definition.

I noticed in one of Curtis Buchanan's recent videos, that he uses a Bioshield Penetrating Oil in lieu of Linseed oil.
Bioshield makes several products. Does anyone have any experience with their penetrating oils, and if so, which one? (I am not so much interested in their polymerizing surface products)
Thanks.
Nowhere do I see the word "finish" in this post. Just saying.

I don't know if he is as savvy as you but a guy named Jeff Jewitt says this link about "finish". Now, like I said, he may not be up to your level but what he says seems reasonable. BTW, I don't know what the title of your book is but Jeff actually has written several. Just sayin.

Nice article, thanks for the link. Quote:
Waxes -- I don't consider wax an appropriate finish in and of itself.
Well we agree here. I did not see a definition of finish in the article. The Definitions I have found are not particularly helpful. So I'll give it a try: Finish: A substance that when applied improves the durability of a solid by protecting against the environment. Frequently used to improve the appearance of the object.
Are you OK with that definition?

I can mostly agree. One of my favorite "finishes" for figured wood is plain BLO. It does NOT give much protection against the environment but it DOES do wonderful things for figured wood. I would NEVER use it for a table top or bar surface but for a picture frame or clock face it is fine. To me, the word "finish" implies that it is the final step in making the project look completed. In the case of a table top the "finish" must not only make it look good but must protect the surface. In the case of a picture frame or clock face it need only make it look pretty as these generally are not subject to water or other harmful substances. BTW, I was a bit snarky in the previous post and I apologize. It was uncalled for. Ken

Ok now lets look at where we got to. Wax is a finish as it is applied to metal to prevent corrosion; so is water as its used when machining to protect the tool, liquid nitrogen for the same reason…. So its not really useful .
Why don't you give it a shot?

I thought we were talking about WOOD finishes. I suppose I should have specified so that you would understand. However, feel free to go as far afield as you wish. It is obvious to me now that you have your opinion and as far as you are concerned that opinion is fact.Good luck. Ken
