Ok, I did a search and found this site; Tru Stone, so I now wonder if different tools might be used for different composites.

I've never turned the stuff, but the IAP guys all use those carbide tools for the stone/metal blanks. From their descriptions, stuff is nasty to turn but the results keep them turning...

I prefer using carbide tools for TruStone. If you're interested, I made a little video that shows the making of a purple TruStone pen:

I've turned a few pens from it and have noticed no real difference in the lifespan of the edge on my carbon steel gouge.

Then again, I turn around and hit my grinder repeatedly, whether I notice it's dulling or not. It's a habit of mine.
