Steve, I have almost every shape imaginable figured out in a plastic tray of some sort

Thanks for the tip though. I can see that as an only possible way on a 2 man pit saw

Citric acid, please refine that for me, name brand used?

TIA

Yeah it`s mostly the etch that makes me nervous, and why I`m scared of abrasives. The word etch sounds very superficial to me, maybe it isn`t so with saws, but I don`t want to find out by removing one.

I'll usually (carefully) remove the saw nuts, remove the handle and sand the saw plate starting at 200 grit. The sandpaper is backed up by a nice sanding block. And I only sand back and forth (not side to side). While sanding I lube with mineral spirits. Depending on the saw I'll go from 220 grit, 300, 400, 600 and 800 grit. If I really want a shine I'll go to 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit followed by polish.

I'll usually wipe the handle down with either DNA or lacquer thinner. After that I'll either apply a coat of shellac to seal it. Then a couple coats of lacquer or Tru Oil to finish up.

Depending on their condition (and rarity) the brass saw nuts and medallion get a light touch with a brass wire brush. Then they get polished

Steve-

Citric acid is pretty much citric acid - the same thing that makes lemons sour. You might find it in a grocery store. I found mine in a shop that sells cooking and brewing supplies. More info here.

Dominic, these seem the same to me

"I only sand back and forth (not side to side)."

I was imagining you would sand from saw tip, to saws termination at the tote? Would that be correct, or are you saying it`s good to sand back to teeth?

Phil I saw that on what you sent before, after I asked, but it doesn`t say what solution to use. 1# to how much ???? and is it water?? Plus will it keep, like Evaporust, just sieve it out, and pour it back in the jug, or does it have a short shelf life, once mixed?

This is awesome stuff people, but each new answer gives me 10 new questions

I sand along the long axis of the saw. Never top to teeth (short axis). This makes all the scratches from sanding go in the same direction and are thus easier to remove.
