Mahogany used outside
      #6483465 - 08/27/13 10:50 PM

I want to build an outside arbor. I have some teak, maybe enough for the project. I have a LOT of mahogany. How well will the mahogany stand up outside? I do not want to put any type of finish on it, just let it weather. I really do not want to use ugly PT.

I think it depends on the type of mahogany. My local lumber yard sells mahogany deck boards which I've used for exterior trim. I meant to seal it but didn't get around to it. It's weathered just fine, albeit a little unevenly. But that's probably because it's partially covered so the exposure isn't consistent.

Disposable income? Is that what I pour into the house?

Unless you know the exact species I would not use it outside without a really good exterior finish like GF450. Many of the species are non-durable. If you want o use a wood that is very very durable in out doors use try Ipê, Advantage lumber has good prices.
