Buying miter saw question
      #4175708 - 02/23/09 07:29 PM

I have pretty much narrowed down my purchase decision to Dewalt vs Makita for my compound sliding miter saw. From what I can tell looking at the 10" versions and from many posts here... you can't go wrong with either of them [even though many here have a preference of one over the other].

My question is 10" vs 12" .

Does the extra 2" come into play much? Specifically, does anyone know how much extra "cut" you get with the larger one?

Do you lose any precision going with the larger saw?

Finally, for either the 10" or the 12" does the makita or the Dewalt take up less space than the other (ie particularly behind the main part of the saw so that it would have to be out further from a wall ).

sorry for all the questions... just want to make the right choice with $$$ so scarce these days.

Personaly I like the 12". I have a 12" dual compound sliding miter and having used my old 10" I can say go with the 12" if you can afford the few extra bucks.

Mine is a Bosh but Makita was my choice except the price I got my Bosh at was several hundred less so it won. I have no complaints about it. Its done everything I have ever asked of it.

If accuracy is your thing, the smaller the blade the better. Twelve inch blades can flex more than you'd think. A slider sort of eliminates the need for a 12" blade. I've used both the saws you mention, and prefer the Dewalt. I absolutely hate the Makita 1013 everyone else raves about on here, one of the worst saws I've ever used. I have the Dewalt 712 8-1/2" slider....easily the most accurate SCMS I've used, and I suspect the smaller blade has a lot to do with it.

+1

(I had a 9 inch Rockwell MS. Nuts on accurate.)

I'm the opposite of Kirk. I look for cost/value and space is an issue for me so I take that into consideration. Heck I even got rid of my workbenches and use foldable workmates.

Many tools are so big that the full capacity is never used by a hobbiest like me.

For pro's it's a different story.

Different strokes..

good luck

I don't think anyone can really help you further. Both brands are great for miter saws. As far as 10 vs 12, I don't think there is a clear winner, it completely depends on your needs. Buy the one that makes you the happiest.

I have a 12" (Bosch). If buying again I would probably get the 10". I have no problem with accuracy, but it is big. The advantage is not so much cross cut capacity, but the thickness of the wood you can cut. I have not needed the added capacity very often and could have found work arounds. Read the specs and compare the cutting capacity to your needs.

As for brand, there are enough people who like each of the majors that you really need to see which is most comfortable for you.

i forget what magazine it was.... maybe american woodworker, but one of them plotted out the crosscut capacities of 8 1/4, 10, and 12" sliders..... as i recall, the 12" had about a 1/2" more crosscut capacity than the 10", and the 10" had about 1/2" more capacity than the 12".

frankly, i'd go 10" for size & cost of blades.

and the ls1013fl is at the top of my list. it comes up as cheap as $350 periodically.....

if your worried about precision I'd drop the "slider" part of your purchase. Most woodworkers have a tablesaw for wide cuts that a slider adds to the mix. This will drastically reduce the footprint your saw will take up also... along with the $200-300 savings from just having a dual bevel fixed miter saw.

I have both DW703 and DW712- both are dead accurate when used with a good blade, clamp and stand. The 703 will do 90% of what I need, which isn't good enough; hence the 712. YMMV.
