Where's Norm???
      #4529965 - 10/09/09 12:04 PM

I just finished checking out the NYW site. Here it is---well into October and they don't have word one about any new season starting in January---heck, by this time, they usually have some of the new projects posted on their web site.

Has anyone heard anything? Web cam has bee shut down for a long time.

Are they just going to let the show fade away? Seems to be a shame if they are. There are a lot of viewers who have supported the show over the years, not to mention all the plans purchased. I think they could do better than just letting it disappear.

I think there would be a press event if this were the case.

Got a feeling Norm has shifted his focus to This Old House.

Jim---I'd think so too. By this time of year, they usually have most all the new episodes taped and pics of projects posted. They certainly had enough time for an announcement. Unless they've been taping the last few months, it's probably too late now.

Yeah Mac---he sure has appeared on TOH more frequently than he used to, though I haven't seen the new season start there yet----local station just finished re-running the brownstone project---so we shall see.

Maybe they're doing another 'best of' season, with only intros and outros being shot new.

While I've never been a big fan of him or his show he has done something big for all of us hobby wood workers.

Meet someone and tell them you build cabinets and they usually ask if your Norm Abrams? No matter what you reply, they know that a "regular" guy can do that sort of work and do it well because Norm is just a regular guy who can do anything with wood. All you gotta do is watch his show to see that... he never makes a mistake or fails to have 4 of the right tools needed ( one in every color... no less )...

Norm Abrams. IMO.. Our hobby wood working alter-ego.

My gut feeling is he's done. Could be either he is tired of the work or he figure's anything else he would make would just be a re-hash of the same types of projects from the past. Hope I'm wrong though. I've been a NYW fan for a long while. I doubt I'd have gotten started in woodworking if not for that show.

Howardly---there's a lot of truth in that!!! I started ww'ing back in 6th grade----waaaaayyyy back. While I've been ww'ing off and on since then, watching Norm was certainly a big part of my getting more involved----and I'd hate to say how much money I've spent on tools as I got more involved.

Indeed, I sure don't remember seeing ww'ing stores like Rockler or Woodcraft back then. Heck, even just after Norm started, about the only game in town was the Sears tool dept. Delta, Jet and the others should have little shrines in there offices, dedicated to Norm.

There haven't been any new shows for a year now. They intentionally stopped producing new shows last year. The "best of" shows are really just Norm doing an intro and re-running an older show. Their website hasn't updated a show list, but it does show the upcoming episode, so they must still be running them. My local PBS station is cranking them back up this weekend. They've been in their fund raising mode for several weeks.

Well---if this is at all "telling"----our PBS station has been out of it's fund raising mode for a while now. They usually run 2 hours of home improvement shows, including NYW----this past Saturday, they dropped NYW and just ran the other three shows.
