One of my biggest challenges was trying to figure out how to re-dimension a board once I already push/pulled on it. I think it's ridiculous that the program doesn't have a built-in function for saying "I want this width to be 'x'" ... instead, when you re-dimension something multiple times, it's all going off of a relative point rather than absolute zero.
Anyway, I found a free plug-in called "Driving Dimensions" that will let you do exactly that... if you need to re-size an object after you've got it placed, you can use this toolset rather than have to lay out a ton of guides or delete the object and re-draw it from scratch. That has made it much more feasible to design on it.
I'll have to check out the forums you mentioned, I bet they have good ways of dealing with furniture design problems
