I do something similar, but just use a piece of 1/2" plywood cut roughly to the length of the drawer, and the exact width needed to position the slide where it belongs. I cut a separate piece for each drawer height, rather than resizing a single piece. That way I can reuse them as I remove and reinstall the slides, which I almost always have to do for one reason or another.
