As a hand tool junkie, one of my favorite Cub Scout experiences was leading my youngest son's Cub Scout den as they built a small wooden box using only hand tools. I presawed all the wood and ran pilot holes. They got to use braces and bits and egg beater drills to put the boxes together, decorate and keep them.
This a project I have to build.
They were fascinated with these tools they could actually use to make things and how well they worked. They had a ball.
I got to demonstrate old hand tools to my older son's Boy Scout troop. They were impressed with the Stanley number 8 plane! My favorite part was passing around a Barry and Way wood plane from the 1850's and explaining that this may be the oldest tool they will ever handle-- and it still works as it would have for their father, his father and about three more generations back.
