I missed the original thread, but I am glad I saw this one. As an old Boy Scout, I need to make one or two of these.
My only concern is how to attach the bottom. It looks like the original bottom cracked over time. Has anyone thought about putting the bottom in dado's in the sides and ends? I know the wood is thin, and I know it would take a little depth out of the box (maybe make the box taller to compensate?).
My reason is that I think the bottom would be stronger and if you let it move, it would also be less susceptible to cracking.
Also, has anyone found a source for the top handle? I want a nice brass one, if possible. I am thinking the screws that attach it need to extra long, so they can hold some weight.
Now I have to get my shop put back together so I can build a couple of these.
Thanks for all the postings and the sketchup drawings!
