I'm building some stools with round legs that are wedged from the top of the seat. The tenons and mortises will be tapered. Could some explain to me how to orientate the grain of the leg, vis a vis the grain of the seat, and also the wedge?

Orient it so the wedge will not split the chair seat (perpendicular to the mortises grain). Does that make sense? Wedge is parallel to tenon grain.

Just to add, if there are stretchers, they should go into the face grain of the leg.
