The European bowl bodgers used hook tools. Robin Wood does some similar demos, and has this video on his site as well. http://www.robin-wood.co.uk/

A tool is as good as the user, that's for sure. Though a few prefer to deny the utility of some, and claim that any user of that tool or tools must be of lesser ability. They even give tools a name that implies only one suitable use.
