help on how to fix my chimney damper - deeno - 03-17-2016

I would like to add a control to my old chimney damper but for the life of me cant figure out how it was set up originally. Pics below. Hoping the good folks here can help get me pointed in the right direction. Tried internet searching on chimney damper designs with no luck. Im guessing because of the hole in the front of the fireplace that its some type of rotary control. thanks.

Can you see inside the hole? I'll bet there is a 1/4" square shank inside.

See if you can get a 12 point socket on it and try giving it a turn.

These links might contain a clue about your damper. The pictures show a Stover Damper with what appears to be a push-pull rod or a crank rod between the damper and the front of the fireplace.
